Every birth is is different but this is certainly a situation that repeats itself time and time again. In order to make informed decisions during labor and delivery you must be INFORMED.

“Everytime I look back over my training I remember this loving and passionate couple and the doula that allowed me to shadow her and her clients as they navigated their way through the uncertain times of COVID, laboring mostly at home, and preparing for a successful VBAC. I had the pleasure of capturing these supportive moments between husband and wife and was in awe. In their notes of appreciation, they mentioned how their doulas support was EVERYTHING. It affirmed for me that I too wanted to be that support in the special moments for growing families for years to come. A doula doesn’t have to be front and center in the delivery room, during the birth and labor… as a matter of fact the doula is additional support for the entire family… providing education and encouragement while preparing for the arrival of your little one, empowering the parents with tools to help each other with pain management, positioning , and breathing, and possibly assisting with postpartum care once the baby is home. Grateful for these moments shared with parents and .marisun website link is above for contact information.

A fact filled book to help our first meeting move along. Sometimes meeting new clients is a blank slate. You might ask, “where on Earth should we start or conversations”?
I pulled a variety of topics together into one resource to get the ball rolling in our first sessions together.
What better way to cover lots of topics than in a cute little package like an alphabet book.

If you would like more information on how a Doula can be an asset for you and your family, please contact me and we can get things started!

October is a month in which we bring awareness to pregnancy and infant loss. It’s a time of remembrance for many families. Today on October 15 we remember the empty arms of many and their broken hearts as well. Please make yourselves aware and allow your loved ones the time to share if they would like, cry whenever and however they like, heal and mend their hearts however they like, express themselves however they like. If you think talking about it is “uncomfortable” imagine how it must feel. Allow people to do all of these things on their own time and in their own space and way. They will be forever grateful.

For those that may be sensitive, this may be hard to see but I am determined to hold space for mommas like myself and those that may or may not be able to share their stories. This hasn’t always been easy for me but as I heal, sharing with others makes me stronger and I absolutely refuse to dim that light to make other comfortable. Remembering my five today and everyday. It’s been a difficult and bumpy road but I am so much stronger because of them. Although my children aren’t living earth side they are in everything I do and fight for. I have grown a loving and caring Birth, Postpartum and Bereavement Doula business with them in mind. I am working hard each and everyday to make them proud and to help mommas bring their little ones into the world safely as well as encourage mommas like myself that hope to bring a healthy baby home. always loving Faith, Christian, Cameron, Jaxon, and Ian.

This was a beautiful birth. Congratulations momma!!

I wasn’t going to say much but realized that I should. Just a few years ago I had not idea there was a day for mothers like me. Although, from some of my nearest and dearest friends, I have never had to express how important acknowledgement of my children is. I always felt some type of shame or guilt for wanting some or any attention on a day that honored mothers with living children or mothers with children that lived on earth and died. But if 1 in 4 women suffer loss, then there are certainly many more mothers that should be pampered on a day that honors mothers. I’ll continue to hold this space for other ladies like me, that long for baby kisses and cuddles because there is absolutely no reason why she should be ignored. If you know someone that is trying their hardest to act as though their heart isn’t broken, they pretend they aren’t shattered that their dreams of parenthood haven’t come true, that acts as if it’s all fine and that no one would ever understand the love you had for a baby you never met. Please love the women caregivers around you. Treat them with kindness and a warm heart, they need it the most.

That third trimester can truly be a roller coaster! It’s a super busy time of growth for your baby, your body is going through all kinds of changes, and it’s the last round of decision making before baby makes their debut! Here are a few of the highlights happening in your third trimester of pregnancy:
* Bones strengthening
* Hair and nails become stronger and vernix begins to coat and protect the baby skin
* Digestive system continues to develop and meconium starts to build up in baby’s intestines.
* Baby’s brain will grow faster than ever!
Baby starts to position themselves for their debut!

Changes in your body:
With that busy baby inside your belly, you're probably feeling lots of fetal activity. You may also be experiencing changes in your body as your bump gets bigger than ever, including:
* Abdominal achiness: As your round ligaments stretch and your belly grows
* Fatigue: You’ll feel more zapped!
You may experience more...
* Heartburn
* Braxton Hicks contractions as your body prepares for labor.
* Stretch marks may develop as your skin stretches and your belly grows. Moisturize to minimize their appearance.
* Backache
* Crazy dreams: Thanks to pregnancy hormones
* Clumsiness
* Lack of bladder control
* Leaky breasts: Your body’s warming up to feed your baby.

Posted • Setting boundaries can be difficult. When it involves the birth of a new baby into the family, some expectant parents struggle to explain to their parents or siblings that they don’t want them present at their birth. Especially now during such a crazy time. Just as it’s important to build your birth team with people you can rely on and trust (a supportive provider, a and supportive doula whether they are virtual or in person, and an educated partner…) it’s equally important to ensure you’re comfortable with the people in the room. Inviting others into your birth space depending on what your health facility allows or to your home shortly after out of obligation or guilt can leave you with regrets or without the birth experience you were hoping for. Protect your space and your experience.

Making sure you move and are on your feet during labor has shown evidence of helping labor progress. Moving in a variety of ways and settling into different positions can encourage gravity to create some progress, can help provide some relief, can help widen the pelvis for delivery, and can even make birth waves more efficient while possibly lowering discomfort.

Listening to your body’s cues is encouraged and supported with the strategy and freedoms of movement throughout the laboring and birthing space.

Check out just a few positions that I have been able to capture/photograph while working with a fellow doula and past clients.

🌟 Standing/sitting in a shower
🌟 Standing and squatting.
🌟partner support
🌟massage, hip squeezes
🌟sitting on a chair or birthing ball
🌟Use of a Rebozo
🌟laying on your side
🌟 laboring in water
🌟kneeling
🌟 on hands and knees
🌟sitting on the toilet
🌟 short walks-pacing

How many of these things do we naturally do in times of physical and mental discomfort? In your birthing plan, and prenatal visits ask your physician/hospital about your desire to move freely and safely throughout your labor. Of these, which do you think might benefit you the most? 📸 photo cred - .marisun

Who needs a Doula? Well to be honest, any birthing person does! A Doula provides physical and emotional support to you and your partner during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period.

A doula might offer:

🤰🏽Attention to physical comfort through techniques such as touch and massage and assistance with breathing
🤗Emotional reassurance, comfort and encouragement
🍼Information about what's happening during labor and the postpartum period, including explanations of procedures
🙋🏾‍♀️Help with facilitating communication between you and the hospital staff
👶🏽Guidance and support for loved ones
👩🏽‍🍼Assistance with breast-feeding

There are many benefits to having a doula on your side!
🏨🏥Research shows that women who use a birth doula are:
💉less likely to need Pitocin
🛏less likely to have a cesarean birth
💊less likely to use any pain medication
👶🏽more likely to rate their childbirth experience positively

Mothers and families are facing this time alone and throughout the pregnancy. Many facilities are only allowing the mother or birthing parent and one partner into a delivery room. This is unfortunate for so many families as they have been depending on the assurance from a loved one as well as a doula.

A doula’s duty is to provide a continuous source of comfort, encouragement and support (both emotional and physical) during labor.

Doulas Provide:
- soothing voice of experience,
- help with relaxation techniques and breathing exercises
- offer advice on labor positions and more.
- A doula may also act as a mediator and is there to be sure the birthing person and loved one are informed and heard when making decisions.

As your due date approaches, your doula will educate you about labor and delivery, making it less scary and more comfortable so you’re empowered to take a more active role in your birth. A doula can offer non-medical pain-management techniques including massage, reflexology, aromatherapy, music and affirmations.

As you make decisions about your birth plan be sure to ask what your doctors and hospital and birth facility allow during this time so that you can prepare.

While schools, bars, Walmart, Target, Lowes, restaurants, etc are open ... this is what it's like being pregnant during this "pandemic". Attending appointments alone. Your husband only getting to see his baby at one, MAYBE 2 ultrasounds, if you're lucky.
While we've been blessed beyond measure to have had a healthy pregnancy thus far, there's still the constant worry of "what if", and knowing you'd have to hear that news alone.
None of this is fair, nor does it make any sense.
If people can go out in groups to go shopping, go out to eat, go riot and protest - pregnant women should be allowed to have a support person at their prenatal appointments.
