On this episode of AwakenInk Deep in the climate-controlled wilds of the modern tattoo studio, we find one of nature's most fascinating creatures: the tattoo artist. Watch closely now... don't make any sudden movements, and whatever you do, don't ask how much a sleeve costs right away.
"G'day! today we're observing the North American Tattooer in its natural habitat."
Crikey, would you look at that beauty.
The tattooer spends most of its day perched upon a rolling stool, surrounded by an elaborate nest constructed from ink bottles, power supplies, coffee cups, and at least three machines it swears it needs for "different line weights."
Notice the intense gaze. That's the look of a predator calculating exactly how badly the client underestimated the size of the tattoo they requested.
Now, over there by the front counter, we've spotted a younger specimen. This one appears to be a Junior Tattooer. Observe as it performs the traditional mating display of its species: showing photos of healed tattoos to absolutely anyone who makes eye contact.
Magnificent.
Oh! Quiet now... we're witnessing something rare.
A walk-in customer has entered the territory.
The customer approaches cautiously and says the phrase, "I want something small."
The tattooer remains calm.
The customer then adds, "Maybe my entire forearm."
Immediate agitation.
Notice the subtle eye twitch. That's a defensive response common among tattooers during feeding hours.
Now let's move closer.
See how the tattooer communicates almost entirely through sarcasm, caffeine, and obscure references to tattoo conventions from eight years ago. Researchers still don't fully understand this dialect.
And over in the corner booth, we have the shop veteran.
A truly remarkable specimen.
Estimated age: thirty-seven.
Estimated tattoo age: one thousand years.
Observe how younger tattooers gather around to hear stories beginning with phrases such as:
"You think that's bad? Back in my day..."
or
"I tattooed a guy once who..."
No one knows whether these stories are true. That information has been lost to history.
Crikey! This is incredible!
The apprentice has made a mistake.
The entire shop has somehow become aware of it within 0.7 seconds.
Experts believe tattoo shops possess a hive-mind structure similar to certain species of ants and highly judgmental crows.
Watch as the apprentice is corrected.
Not harshly.
Not gently.
But in the sacred tattoo tradition known as "getting roasted forever."
And here comes one of my favorite moments.
The lunch ritual.
Notice that despite earning enough money to buy lunch, the tattooer instead consumes an energy drink, a ni****ne pouch, half a protein bar, and pure spite.
A balanced diet in the wild.
Now the client asks the most dangerous question known to science:
"Can you make it a little bigger?"
The tattooer freezes.
The atmosphere changes.
Even nearby species become silent.
This is because the stencil was already approved thirty-seven minutes ago.
An exceptionally risky encounter.
Fortunately, our tattooer de-escalates the conflict by sighing dramatically and reprinting the stencil.
What a professional.
As the day comes to an end, the tattooers gather near the entrance of the shop. They exchange stories, discuss impossible clients, admire each other's work, and somehow spend forty-five minutes trying to decide where to get dinner.
A behavior scientists call "closing."
It usually lasts longer than the actual closing process.
And there you have it.
The tattoo artist.
Highly intelligent. Extremely territorial about their station. Able to identify fonts at distances exceeding 200 yards. Sustained almost entirely by caffeine and bad decisions.
A truly magnificent creature.
Crikey, what a beauty.
