Today marked the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. The intention is to remember the children who attended residential schools, those who never returned home, their families and communities, and to recognize the profound and ongoing impacts of the residential school system on Indigenous peoples, cultures, and communities.
I spent 6 years as a rural physician working in various indigenous communities across North America. I can write books on all the adventures those years brought me. Breathtaking beauty, but often times overshadowed by profound pain. I look forward to returning and continuing my work there, this time with the tools and wisdom that were once integral to these communities and people.
