What can happen when opportunity meets support and determination?

Seven years ago, Solomon began his journey at Bartlett Regional Hospital as a Project SEARCH intern. Today, he is a valued member of the Same Day Surgery team—building skills, contributing to his workplace, and continuing to grow.

Through Supported Employment, Solomon had the opportunity to explore his strengths, gain confidence, and turn a first step into a meaningful career.

His story reminds us that employment is about more than a job. It’s about independence, connection, purpose, and finding a place to belong.

This National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we’re celebrating Solomon’s journey and the opportunities that make meaningful employment possible.

More than a job. A place to belong.

đźš« DISABILITY IS NOT A PUNCHLINE.

“Just a joke.”
“Don’t be so sensitive.”
“I didn’t mean to offend anyone.”

Sometimes, the words we use to make others laugh are the same words that leave someone feeling small, excluded, or misunderstood.

Disability is not a punchline. A person’s disability, the way they communicate, move, learn, or experience the world should never be a reason to make them the target of a joke.

Humor should bring people together, not make someone feel like they don’t belong.

And here’s something worth remembering: just because you didn’t intend to hurt someone doesn’t mean your words didn’t hurt.

Setting boundaries around disability-related jokes isn’t about being too sensitive. It’s about asking for the same respect, dignity, and kindness that every person deserves.

Before you laugh, share a joke, or make a comment, pause and ask yourself:

💭 Would this still be funny if the person I’m talking about were standing right beside me?

đź’ Am I laughing with someone, or am I laughing at them?

đź’ Could my words make someone feel ashamed of something they cannot or should not have to hide?

We all make mistakes. What matters is being willing to listen, learn, and do better when someone tells us we’ve crossed a line.

Disability is part of someone’s life. It is never a reason to take away their dignity.

Let’s create a community where everyone can feel safe, respected, and included, not just when it’s convenient, but even when it means speaking up and setting a boundary.

❤️ Be mindful of your words. Respect the boundary. Choose kindness.

FAQs: What does a visit with ILP look like?

For infants and toddlers, learning and development happen through strong, supportive relationships. đź’™

At REACH Infant Learning Program (ILP), visits are centered around you and your child. We meet with families in their homes and everyday environments, creating opportunities to support your child’s development while strengthening the relationship you share.

Every family is unique, and ILP works alongside you to make visits meaningful, comfortable, and part of your child’s everyday life.

📢 Myth vs. Fact: Supported Employment

Many people misunderstand the role of job coaches in the workplace. Let's set the record straight!

❌ MYTH: Job coaches do the work for employees.

âś… FACT: Job coaches provide guidance, training, and support to help employees learn job responsibilities, build confidence, and succeed independently in their roles.

đź’ˇ Key Takeaway: The goal of job coaching is empowerment, not dependence. Job coaches help individuals develop skills, navigate workplace expectations, and achieve greater independence and long-term success on the job.

Supported employment is about recognizing potential, fostering growth, and creating opportunities for individuals to thrive in competitive, integrated workplaces.

🌟 This National Disability Employment Awareness Month, let's challenge misconceptions and celebrate the value of inclusive employment.

What if “just doing your job” is actually helping someone change their life?

For Job Coaches, the impact often goes far beyond finding a job or learning workplace tasks.

It’s the encouragement that builds confidence.
The support that turns goals into possibilities.
The guidance that builds independence.
The connection that creates belonging.
And the belief in someone’s potential—even when they may not see it yet.

This National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we’re celebrating the Job Coaches who show up, support growth, create opportunities, and help people build meaningful careers.

Your work matters more than you know.
