Fusion and disc replacement solve spinal problems in very different ways. While fusion stabilizes a segment by stopping motion, Total Disc Replacement aims to provide stability while maintaining movement. At Cuéllar Spine, Dr. Jason M. Cuéllar carefully evaluates anatomy, imaging, symptoms, and lifestyle to determine which approach is most appropriate for each patient.

A recent study published by Dr Perez-Albela et al in Spine 2026 was a level 1 meta-analysis showing shorter recovery and greater return to work odds at 6wks, 3 months and 12 months after cervical adr compared to acdf.
I think it highlights and confirms what I have always known by my personal experience with my own patients but it’s nice to see it backed up by formal scientific research.

An MRI can tell us a lot—but it doesn’t always tell the entire story. Standing and dynamic X-rays, CT scans, and other diagnostic studies can reveal important information about alignment, bone structure, stability, and how the spine behaves in motion. At Cuéllar Spine, the goal is to understand the complete picture before recommending treatment.

Pain or tingling traveling into an arm or leg can sometimes begin in a small opening in the spine. Foraminal stenosis occurs when the space where a spinal nerve exits becomes narrowed, potentially causing pain, numbness, or weakness. A precise diagnosis can reveal where the nerve is being compressed and help guide treatment toward the actual source of symptoms.

Sometimes the smallest notes carry the biggest meaning. ❤️ Before his dad’s procedure, this young patient’s son wrote Dr. Jason M. Cuéllar a special letter asking him to help his dad feel better, thanking him for his care, and reminding his dad just how much he was missed at home.

Moments like these are a powerful reminder that caring for one patient can mean so much to an entire family.
