UMKC School of Nursing & Health Studies The UMKC School of Nursing & Health Studies, offers students an environment rich in opportunities In 1995 we introduced a PhD curriculum. etc.

The School of Nursing and Health Studies has been an integral part of UMKC for more than 50 years. Beginning in 1972 with the institution of the Master of Science in Nursing program and followed shortly by the founding of the School of Nursing in 1974, SoNHS has a long and illustrious history. In 1981 we introduced our online RN-BSN Program, one of the first of its kind in the nation, setting a precedent for the future of education in nursing. Then in 2001 we began our Pre-Licensure BSN track, followed by the start of our Doctor of Nursing practice program in 2007, which completed the collegiate path from new student to doctorate. After establishing ourselves as a recognized and and exceptional school of nursing, we saw an even greater opportunity to offer our students, a Bachelor in Health Studies, which was introduced in 2011. With the addition of this program, we could allow our students to get a broader education of the Health Sciences world and help lead them down the path of whichever area of study the chose, whether it be the completion of the well-rounded and prepared BHS graduate, a pre-nursing track, pre-medicine. In 2013 we officially changed our name to the School of Nursing and Health Studies, to further exemplify the full breadth of knowledge and education we had to share with prospective students and the community. We have been growing and developing every year since the beginning in 1972, and are proud to count ourselves as a strong and eminent establishment within UMKC and Kansas City as whole. And we will continue striving to deliver an education that is nothing but exceptional to any student who walks through our doors (real or virtual).

At State of the University, Chancellor Agrawal celebrated those contributing to the big leaps happening on campus.

Once again, our bachelor of science in nursing programs achieved top national honors, up three slots to No. 56 in the nation, placing it in the top 10% nationwide.

One researcher who is propelling UMKC forward is our faculty member, Joey Lightner. He recently won a Fulbright Award and will use his time abroad to collect data across six Brazilian cities—to understand how mobility shapes community health. On top of his prestigious Fulbright award, Joey will be able to further his research through a new HRSA grant for $3 million.

We’re excited about the BIG LEAPS in store for UMKC. Roo up!

Last Friday, Café Corazón helped support our School of Nursing and Health Studies Alumni Board with the limited time “Roo Remix” drink, a portion of the proceeds going towards our Alumni Board while it’s available for the month of September! As part of their First Fridays event, they let the Board host a table and bring a DJ and some local vendors, while the Cafe also provided a free salsa class! The event was a success and we even saw KC Roo get involved and try some salsa! 💃 Stop in to Café Corazón this month to try out the Roo Remix (a blueberry spritz with a pineapple cold foam) and support your SoNHS Alumni Board 💛💙🦘

Congratulations to our alumnus, Michael Maloney, who placed second nationally in an essay contest through the Arnold P. Gold Foundation. Maloney submitted in Spring 2026 while he was finishing up his nursing degree. The contest asked healthcare students to engage in a writing exercise that illustrates an experience where they worked to ensure that humanism was at the core of care.

Here’s what Maloney said about his essay, "Five More Minutes."

“My essay highlights a pivotal moment, early in my nursing journey, when taking a few extra minutes to sit and listen to a patient created a deeply meaningful connection. It's a moment I will always carry with me and a lesson from which we could all benefit.”

Maloney’s full essay will be published in The Journal of Professional Nursing in Fall 2026.
