I think a lot of women think tracking their macros is obsessive or restrictive when in reality it gives you more food freedom and flexibility especially when traveling.

Traveling when training for specific physique goals can be stressful but if you know how to track your macros you can actually enjoy going out to dinner or a treat.
Macro counting teaches you how to look at the bigger picture and plan your day accordingly.

Here is what I do to stay on track while traveling but still enjoy my meals and not feel stressed
1. Pack your snacks.
JJ & Erika Peterson travel protein powders, rice cakes, turkey chomps, Quest protein chips, Lesser Evil popcorn, travel size peanut butter and apples.

2. Prioritize protein at every meal. Chicken, fish, steak and burgers.
3. Choose a healthy carb option steamed vegetables, salads (dressing on the side) sweet potatoes or rice.

3. Look at the menu ahead of time to see what your options are.

4. Stay hydrated. Sometimes dehydration can be confused with hunger.

Following these steps allowed me to stay within my macros and still enjoy eating out on vacation.

Macros aren’t just numbers. They are a tool to give you confidence around food and still enjoy life.

Here’s what I want women over 50 to understand:

Hormonal changes during menopause can influence fat distribution, sleep, body composition changes and energy availability but they don’t make fat loss impossible.

You don’t need to be in a drastic deficit or do hours of cardio a week. You need to have a strategy that supports your hormones, preserves and builds muscle and suits your lifestyle.

I made a decision at 41 that I wanted to be healthy and I haven’t looked back since. The journey has not been linear. I have had bumps in the road with health scares, hormones, stress etc… BUT In 12 years I haven’t gone more than 10 days (minus surgery recovery) without going to the gym. I make it a priority to fuel my body and limit processed food’s and sugar. I feel better living this way and hopefully it will pay off when I am 70 and beyond.

If I can do it you can to! Fit in your 50’s is where it’s at! 💪

Body Building prep at 53. Is not easy.

10 weeks apart!

Sometimes it’s hard to see the progress without the photos.

10 weeks of
- tracking nutrition
- lifting 5 days a week
- getting my steps
- prioritizing sleep
- monitoring my hormones
- practicing patience
- staying consistent even when I don’t feel like it.

The scale doesn’t show you this and honestly when I look at myself everyday I don’t always see it either.

These photos remind me that being consistent compounds and that change is actually happening even if it feels slow sometimes.

I like to say that age is irrelevant but it does bring a different set of challenges. Our bodies definitely don’t respond as quickly as when we are younger. Recovery is huge! I am continuing to learn how to work with my body at this stage of life while preparing to step on a body building stage for the first time.

We are just getting started!
April 2027 here we come!

If you are a women in your 40’s, 50’s or beyond wondering whether it’s “too late” to change your body..

It isn’t….

All the things I told myself to keep me from pursuing a goal I thought about for years.

I’m too old. My hormones are complicated. People might judge me. I might fail. Blah, blah, blah!

But finally those thoughts became less important to me and the one I kept coming back to was because I want to! I was sick and tired of letting fear dictate my actions.

At 53, I’m not trying to look 23. I’m redefining what this version of me is capable of. It’s honestly so freeing.

Looking forward to this next chapter and where it takes me.

What’s something you’ve almost talked yourself out of because you let fear and excuses get in the way??

As someone who had a hysterectomy at age 39 and then ovaries removed at 51 I have learned the power of optimal hormones. I have spent a lot of time over the years educating myself on how hormones affect all the organs in our body and how to optimize them
so I can feel my best!

This is my current plan for keeping my hormones optimal!
1. HRT currently on Estrogen, progesterone and testosterone.
2. Monthly blood work to see where my levels are to make sure I am not to high or to low and record my current symptoms. Positive and negative.
3. Protein first thing in the morning. This is crucial post menopause. It helps keep your blood sugar stable throughout the day.
4. Keeping my meals balanced with protein, carbs and fats.
5. Morning sunlight or red light therapy. Helps set your circadian rhythm.
6. Strength training 4-5x a week helps build and maintain muscle. Supports metabolism and insulin sensitivity.
7. Daily walks- helps reduce anxiety, weight management. Improves focus and concentration.
8. Gut health. Minimal gluten and dairy and increased fiber.

I started my hormone optimization journey 6 years ago and it has changed my health in so many ways. I am healthier at 53 than I was at 43!
