Pictured below is Kelso Police Officer David Sytsma with “Dixie,” our newly acquired dual-purpose Wellness / Electronic Storage Detection canine. Dixie is already proving to be a valuable addition to our KPD family in support our employee wellness program. She is also secondarily trained to detect a wide spectrum of digital electronic storage media devices that are commonly used among child sexual abuse offenders to store, share and trade images and videos depicting child sexual abuse. ESD K9s have proven to be very effective to law enforcement in the investigation and prosecution of offenders involved in child sexual abuse cases.

Officer Sytsma and Dixie recently completed two weeks of intense training in Indiana and they will now be a valuable resource to our law enforcement partners in Cowlitz County as we collectively work together to identify and hold accountable those offenders who engage in the solicitation, receipt, collection, dissemination and use of child sexual abuse materials.

You will likely see Dixie at many city functions and events going forward.

September is Su***de Prevention Month.

When we talk about su***de prevention, we also need to talk about domestic violence.

Living with abuse can profoundly affect a person’s sense of safety, identity, hope, and control. Research shows a strong connection between intimate partner violence (IPV) and suicidal thoughts and attempts. A 2026 meta-analysis found that survivors of intimate partner violence had 3–5 times higher odds of suicidal thoughts and attempts than those who had not experienced IPV.

And the connection goes both ways.

🔹 26% of women who died by su***de in one national study had a known history of domestic violence.
🔹 Men account for about 80% of su***de deaths in the United States.
🔹 Men are also survivors. About 1 in 4 men report experiencing violence from an intimate partner.
🔹 Research has also found that intimate partner violence circumstances are present in a significant number of su***de deaths, with many IPV-related su***des involving men.

Abuse can make someone feel like there is no way out.

But there is a way forward.

Safety planning. Advocacy. Connection. Community. Support.

If someone you know is experiencing abuse, believe them. Listen without judgment. Help them connect with resources. And if you are concerned someone may be at risk of su***de, take it seriously and help them connect with immediate support.

Su***de prevention is domestic violence prevention.
Domestic violence prevention is su***de prevention.

There is help. There is hope. There is a way forward.
