🎶 Mindset Weekly Song Shoutout: “She Talks to Angels” by The Black Crowes🎶

This week’s, were taking a deeper, more reflective turn into a song that explores loneliness, pain, and the hidden struggles people carry within without letting the world see them.

Released in 1990, “She Talks to Angels” tells the story of a woman living with personal struggles and finding comfort in her own private world. Beneath its soulful vocals and acoustic guitar is a reminder that we know all too well: We don't always know what someone else is going through, even when we see them every day.

In counseling, we often talk about the masks people wear to get through life. Sometimes pain hides behind a smile, independence, humor, or the simple response, “I'm fine.” People develop different ways of coping with difficult experiences. It's our survival mechanism at work! But those coping mechanisms can sometimes leave people feeling even more isolated. This brings us to a big lesson: COPING IS NOT THE SAME AS HEALING

We can say we moved on from the tough parts of our life, but ignoring a wound doesn't mean it heals, instead it FESTERS. Learning to acknowledge our pain, understand our patterns, and reach for healthy support can help us move beyond simply getting through the day.

This song reminds us of the importance of looking beyond the surface. Compassion doesn't require us to have all the answers or understand someone's entire story. Sometimes it starts with listening without judgment, offering support, and creating a space where someone feels safe enough to be honest about what they're experiencing.

✨ You never know what someone might be carrying beneath the surface. Check in on your people, lead with compassion, and remember that asking for help isn't a weakness. Sometimes, letting someone in is where healing begins.

🎶 Mindset Weekly Song Shoutout: “The Impression That I Get” by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones 🎶

For this week’s spotlight, were going a little NICHE with some 90's Ska! Bringing some serious energy, we have a song that asks a surprisingly thoughtful question: What do we really know about how we’ll handle something until we're actually faced with it?

“The Impression That I Get” by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones is an energetic ska classic built around uncertainty, confidence, and the fear of facing situations we can't predict. Beneath those mighty mighty horns, the fast fast rhythm, and unmistakable UNMISTAKABLE energy is the very relatable human experience of wondering how we will respond when life throws something difficult our way.

In counseling, we often encounter this same kind of uncertainty. Anxiety can have us rehearsing hypothetical situations, imagining everything that could go wrong, and convincing ourselves that we won't be able to handle it. But sometimes, the fear of what might happen becomes scarier than the reality itself.

The song's message reminds us that we don't always have to know exactly how we'll respond before we face the challenge. We can trust that we'll learn, adapt, ask for help, and figure things out as we go. That's RESILIENCE. That's CONFIDENCE.

That's BRAVERY!

We don't have to predict every storm to know that we can learn how to weather it. And sometimes, confidence isn't about knowing you'll never struggle. It's knowing that if you do, you won't have to face it alone.

✨ So this Wednesday, turn up the volume, embrace the energy, and remember: you don't have to have everything figured out today. Sometimes you just have to take the next step.

🎶 Mindset Weekly Song Shoutout: “Stone” by Wh***ey Myers 🎶

This week’s spotlight is on a song that captures what it can feel like to carry the weight of life while trying to find your way forward.

“Stone” by Wh***ey Myers paints a picture of struggle and isolation. It speaks to that feeling of being weighed down by the things we carry. To that point, there is a heaviness throughout the song that many people can relate to, especially during seasons when life feels like more than we can handle.

In counseling, we often talk about the emotional weight people carry with them. Past experiences, grief, regret, stress, relationships, and unresolved pain can slowly become burdens that feel impossible to put down.

Sometimes, we become so accustomed to carrying them that we forget what it feels like to live without them. But recognizing that weight is an important first step.

Healing doesn't mean pretending the hard things never happened. It means learning how to process them, understand them, and decide what we want to carry with us functioning forward. Sometimes that means asking for help, setting boundaries, changing old patterns, or simply giving ourselves permission to acknowledge that we're struggling.

“Stone” lets us know that feeling weighed down doesn't mean we're destined to stay there. Even when the road is difficult, there is still a path forward.

✨ If you've been carrying something heavy lately, remember: you don't have to carry it alone. Sometimes putting down even a little of the weight can be the beginning of moving forward.

🎶 Mindset Weekly Song Shoutout: “All My Friends” by The Revivalists🎶

This week’s spotlight is on a song that celebrates one of the most important parts of a healthy life, the people we share it with.

“All My Friends” carries an infectious energy, but underneath the upbeat sound is a meaningful message of friendship, connection, and the memories we create along the way. It captures that feeling of looking around at the people who have been there through the good times, the difficult times, and everything in between.

In counseling, we often talk about the importance of connection. Human beings are social creatures, and we rely on each other to co-regulate our emotions. The very presence of people we care about has a positive effect on our mental health. As such, having people we can laugh with, lean on, and simply be ourselves around can make a tremendous difference in our emotional well-being.

Now some might dismiss this with a negative, almost pessimistic mindset, citing that they don't HAVE a lot of friends to co-regulate with. However, the best part of social connection is that you don's NEED a huge circle of people. You just need one, a single relationship where you fee valued, trusted, seen, and supported.

Now as we all know, life can get busy, and it's easy to become so focused on work, responsibilities, stress, and the next thing on our list that we forget to nurture our mental health. Sometimes taking care of our mental health looks like therapy, exercise, or self-care. Sometimes it looks like calling an old friend and saying, “Hey, how have you been?”

✨ So this week, take a moment to appreciate your people. Send the text. Make the call. Grab a coffee. Share a laugh. We aren't meant to navigate life alone, and sometimes the best memories are made with the people who walk beside us.

🎶 Mindset Weekly Song Shoutout: "Drive" by Incubus 🎶

This week's spotlight is on a song that has inspired listeners for over two decades with its message of courage, self-awareness, and taking control of your own life. Released in 2000, Incubus' "Drive" reminds us that while fear is a natural part of life, it doesn't have to be the force that determines our direction.

The song asks an important question: Who—or WHAT—is driving your life? Fear? Doubt? Past experiences? Or your own values, goals, and hopes for the future?

In counseling, we often work with people who feel like anxiety, depression, stress, or past trauma has taken the driver's seat. While we can't always choose the circumstances we face, we can learn healthier ways to respond to them. Courage and Healing isn't about eliminating fear altogether. It's about recognizing it without allowing it to control our choices.

"Drive" encourages us to take ownership of our journey, even when the road ahead feels uncertain. Every small decision to face a fear, set a boundary, ask for help, or take a step toward personal growth is a reminder that we have more control than we sometimes realize.

✨ If you've been feeling stuck or uncertain, let this song remind you that fear doesn't have to be in the driver's seat. You have the ability to choose the direction of your own story, one step at a time.

🎶 **Mindset Weekly Song Shoutout: “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong** 🎶

This week's spotlight is on a timeless classic that reminds us to slow down and appreciate the beauty that's often hiding in plain sight. Released in 1967, Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" celebrates life's simple moments, like "Trees of Green", "Red Roses", and of course the connections we share with one another.

Now, in counseling, practicing gratitude doesn't mean ignoring life's hardships. Instead, it means learning to recognize moments of hope, joy, and peace even in difficult seasons. You have to take the time to notice the good around you. In doing so, wet can help shift our perspective, reduce stress, and remind ourselves that light can exist alongside life's challenges.

"What a Wonderful World" encourages us to pause, breathe, and appreciate the people and moments that make life meaningful.

✨ Today, take a moment to look around. You might just discover that even on an ordinary day, there's something wonderful waiting to be noticed.

🎶 Mindset Weekly Song Shoutout: “Better Than Love” by Griffin House 🎶

This week's spotlight is on a song that reminds us that the strongest relationships are built on more than just emotion. Griffin House's "Better Than Love" explores the idea that lasting connection comes from trust, commitment, understanding, and choosing one another, ideas that the head honcho of marriage counseling John Gottman knew all too well!

In counseling, we often talk about how healthy relationships aren't sustained by feelings alone. They grow through honest communication, mutual respect, empathy, APPRECIATION, and the willingness to navigate challenges together. Love may be the foundation, but it's the daily choices we make that strengthen our relationships over time.

"Better Than Love" encourages us to look beyond the excitement of romance and appreciate the deeper bonds that are formed through resilience and shared growth.

✨ Whether you're investing in your relationship with a partner, family member, friend, or even yourself, remember that the strongest connections are built one intentional step at a time.

🎶 Mindset Weekly Song Shoutout: “We Are Worth It” by Fearless Soul & Rachel Schroeder 🎶

This week's spotlight is on a song that tells us our worth is not determined by our mistakes, our struggles, or the opinions of others! This song speaks directly to anyone who has ever questioned their value or felt like they weren't enough.

The lyrics encourage listeners to replace self-criticism with self-compassion. They remind us that despite life's setbacks, disappointments, and challenges, every person has inherent value. Our worth isn't something we have to earn through achievement, perfection, or pleasing others, rather it is something something we already possess.

In counseling, self-worth is often at the heart of healing. Anxiety, depression, trauma, and difficult life experiences can distort the way we see ourselves, causing us to focus on our FLAWS while overlooking our STRENGTHS. Therapy helps people challenge those negative beliefs, recognize their resilience, and develop a healthier, more balanced view of themselves.

Learning to believe "I am worthy" doesn't mean believing we're perfect. It means accepting that we are deserving of kindness, respect, growth, and love, even while we're still learning and healing. That mindset creates space for confidence, healthier relationships, and a greater willingness to pursue the life we want.

✨ If you've been struggling to see your own worth, let this song be a reminder that your value has never depended on your circumstances. You are worthy! Not because you've done everything right, but because you are human!

🎶 Mindset Weekly Song Shoutout: “I Don't Owe You Anything” by The Smiths 🎶

This week's spotlight is on one of The Smiths' more understated yet thought-provoking songs. Released on their 1984 self-titled debut album, “I Don't Owe You Anything” explores the tension between love, expectations, and personal autonomy. Its lyrics challenge the idea that affection and emotional investment can ever be demanded or owed simply because someone wants them.

At first listen, the title can sound harsh, but beneath it lies an important truth about healthy relationships: genuine connection cannot be forced. Love, trust, and vulnerability are gifts that are freely given! They are not obligations that can be expected or earned through pressure. For those that know a little counseling lingo, this falls in line with the Sunk Cost Fallacy, a cognitive distortion that our die hard romantics know all too well. Its the idea that if you shed enough blood, cry enough tears, and put enough effort into something (i.e. a relationship) that you will eventually get what you deserve. The tough part about this is that, like the song says, you are not owed someone's affection just because you put yourself out there, and vice versa. That is why it is important to be mindful about how you are acting in relationships and maintain strict boundaries.

In counseling, boundaries are one of the foundations of healthy relationships. Whether with a romantic partner, family member, friend, or coworker, boundaries help define where one person's responsibilities end and another's begin. They allow us to communicate our needs honestly while respecting the needs of others.

“I Don't Owe You Anything” reminds us that healthy relationships are built on mutual respect, not obligation. Setting boundaries isn't about pushing people away, it's about creating relationships that thrive through the tough times. When we recognize that we cannot control another person's feelings or choices, we free ourselves to show up more authentically and compassionately.

✨ If you've been learning to say "no," communicate your needs, or build healthier relationships, let this song remind you that boundaries are not barriers, they're an act of self-respect and one of the strongest foundations for meaningful connection.
