Hi friend! 👋

I just got back from three days in Dallas at the ATNS medical conference. Physicians, psychotherapists, physical therapists, researchers, coaches.

A room full of people whose whole job is figuring out how to help with the conditions you’re dealing with.

In three days I got to:

🎤 Present Dr. Sarah Cefai’s findings to a room full of medical professionals
🤝 Meet trailblazers and some of the most incredible people on the planet
🫂 Hug coach Devon Carter for the first time ever
📝 Learn enough to make this newsletter 793 pages long

I’ll hold myself back and share the most important thing. It’s the one that had my team in tears.

At the closing of the conference, Dr. Howard Schubiner asked me to stand up. In front of everyone, he said how grateful he is for the impact of the recovery interviews on the channel, because hardly a day goes by that he doesn’t hear from someone who found their path to recovery after coming across one of my videos.

I’m still not over it.

He also let the room in on something I’d been keeping to myself as it’s still hard to process: on Monday, Oct 26 there’s a new video on my channel where Dr. Schubiner walks me through Emotional Awareness and Expression Therapy (EAET), the technique he developed with Mark Lumley, now with research backing its efficacy for neuroplastic symptoms.

Spoiler alert: during that session I cried for 15 minutes straight. If you’d rather not watch me cry, don’t worry, it’s timestamped so you can skip right past it. 😅

I’m still feeling a bit overwhelmed by all of it. But I just finished preparing my presentation on everything I learned at ATNS for my Brain Retraining 101 support call on Monday, Oct 26 at 10am Pacific, and I’d love for you to be there. 👇

Wishing you a happy and healthy nervous system! 💛

💭 Could reassurance become another way of checking whether your symptoms are gone?

I call it the reassurance loop. You reach for tools that can be helpful, but the goal quietly becomes making the symptoms disappear. Then you check again: “Do I feel better yet?”

That shift in intention matters. In the full episode, I explain why and what these tools can be for on a high-symptom day.

Comment LOOP and I’ll send you the full episode.

💭 Of course you want the symptoms to go away. I did too. 👇

So being told to observe them with “no agenda” can feel like a pretty ridiculous request.

Alan Gordon’s ( ) sea turtle analogy is how I explain this when I teach somatic tracking inside Brain Retraining 101. Just floating, noticing, letting the fish do their thing.

You can still want to get better while giving yourself a moment without checking whether a tool has worked yet. Yes. That is possible.

Also...my turtle impression needs work. The image is worth borrowing. 🐢🫠

Comment TURTLE and I’ll send you the full video. Just went live on my YouTube Channel.

☁️ This might be one of the simplest tool I use. It’s one sentence, and I say it all the time. 👇

It started as one line in Nicole Sachs’s book Mind Your Body.

Swipe to try it.

💭 How do you explain the brain’s role without making someone feel dismissed? 👇

That’s the question I asked neurologist Dr. Dario Zagar. He explains that symptoms can be completely real even when tests don’t show structural damage.

He sometimes uses migraine as an example: the pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light are real, even when an MRI doesn’t show a structural cause. The brain and nervous system can create very real symptoms through the way they’re functioning.

And when someone has already felt dismissed, how we explain this matters. Their experience deserves to be heard and taken seriously.

Comment DARIO and I’ll send you the full interview.

Driving around Dallas, Texas at 1am with Dr. Howard Schubiner in my passenger seat... what is this dream world that I’m living in??

And that was just one of about a hundred moments like it this week 🤯

It started with a few friends from this field coming to stay with me in Austin, and then we drove up to Dallas together for the ATNS conference (Association for the Treatment of Neuroplastic Symptoms). 7 full days of the most amazing stuff!

I spent the week surrounded by people doing this work, hearing story after story of people getting their lives back. I hung out with my gurus, the trailblazers of this whole field, like that’s just a normal thing I do now. And I got to present at the conference on the main stage, which I still can’t quite believe.
I’m so proud to be part of this movement. The way people understand and treat chronic pain, chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), long COVID, and other debilitating conditions is changing, and the people in these photos are a big reason why ❤️

A massive heartfelt thank you to every single one of you doing incredible work in this field. I loved and will treasure every single conversation we had over the past few days!

And to those of you who are living life with a chronic condition, even bigger hugs to you and a reminder if you need it to keep going because people do fully recover from these conditions 🫂❤️

Near the end of my recovery, those crashes crushed me every time. I was sure I’d done something wrong. How I wish someone had explained this to me back then.

Swipe to see why a crash can actually mean you’re on the right track.

This idea comes from Alan Gordon, founder of the Pain Psychology Center. If you want to go deeper, his book The Way Out is fascinating.

Pre-party for the ATNS conference, Austin edition!

Before we all head to Dallas for the Association for the Treatment of Neuroplastic Symptoms conference, Irena, Vanessa, and Miguel chose to come hang with me in Austin first, and it absolutely made my month. Still mind-blowing to me that none of these people would be in my life if I hadn’t gone through chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). A house full of people who went through some horrific years, thrilled to be past it and fully living again, and friends. Somehow, because of all of this.

First stop: Lady Bird Lake on a boat named Batgirl, top speed 5 mph. We felt on top of the world regardless, celebrating how far we’ve all come.

Took Miguel to the Cathedral of Junk, three stories of outdoor art made entirely of junk, like a hoarder channeled it all into something people can actually appreciate.

Getting the pups used to our guests was a daily project. Chloe loved everybody instantly. Blue thought everybody was an attacker. Chicken fixed both.

I got really carried away making brunch every morning, so excited to have guests. A lot of it didn’t get eaten, but I was still so thrilled to have a table full of people eating breakfast with me.

Next up, Texas barbecue: brisket, ribs, cream corn. Once again, overfeeding our guests.

Sunset waiting on the famous bats. No bats. No cool breeze either. Our guests now know you sweat 24 hours a day in Texas, even in mid-October.

Then, prepping for an in-person podcast after years in the Zoom world: face masks, eye patches, and maybe a little ch*****ne. In the studio we did our best to make it as helpful as possible for anyone facing ME/CFS, long COVID, chronic pain, whatever it may be.

For five out of six of us, our first cybertaxi ride, Tesla’s version of an autonomous vehicle. DeLorean doors, no back seat, no steering wheel.

We wrapped up the night on Austin’s famous Rainy Street and took an electric minibus home, somewhat guiltily singing along to N.W.A. Loving the nostalgia, horrified by the lyrics.

Imperfect, messy, beautiful. The pre-ATNS extravaganza has already been phenomenal. I can only imagine what’s coming.

💭 If you’ve been sick for 10, 15, 20 years, you may have started to lose hope. 👇

Stephanie knows that feeling.

She got sick at 29. It took 27 years, countless diagnoses, and a lot of dead ends before things started to shift.

And she says it’s possible, even after all that time.

Her full story just went live on YouTube, including what finally helped.

Comment COLOR and I’ll send you the full episode.
