Did you know The United States Department of Agriculture has identified at least 20 “food deserts” in Knoxville—neighborhoods without ready access to fresh, healthy, and affordable food. Instead of supermarkets and grocery stores, these communities are served only by fast food restaurants and convenience stores that offer few healthy, affordable food options.

Researchers have found that people living in food deserts, which are low-income areas lacking large grocery stores, supermarkets, or supercenters, tend to have a less nutritious diet and poorer health outcomes than those living in other communities.
