Your breath is one of the fastest ways to influence how you feel.

Stress often changes how we breathe—faster, higher, and through the mouth.

Instead, practice breathing low and wide, expanding through your lower ribs.

Think quiet, easy, nasal breathing rather than taking bigger breaths.

The goal? Breathe as little as you need to meet the demands of the moment.

Small changes in how you breathe can change how you feel, move, recover, and perform.

Take a moment. Breathe.

I had the opportunity to join fellow DMV (DC, MD, VA) ALPs at Progressive Athletics in Columbia, MD, where my fellow ALP Linette hosted an incredible Pain Education Workshop with Dr. Morrison of Morrison Chiropractic.

Dr. Morrison is speaking our language!

He went over modern pain science:

Nociception vs. pain. The nervous system. Why pain doesn’t always equal tissue damage.

He also went over acute versus chronic pain and how he helps people understand what their bodies are capable of instead of teaching them to fear every sensation.

There was so much alignment with what we learn and practice through Active Life that I found myself wishing the workshop had been MUCH longer.

But after the seminar was over came the connection with my fellow ALPs.

Two and a half hours later, after conversations with my peers throughout the region, I found it hard to leave!

We share the same thoughts:

“What else can we learn?”

“What does the evidence actually say?”

“How can we help this person become more capable and confident?”

Huge thank you to Linette for hosting (and the hugs!), to Dr. Morrison for sharing his expertise, and to all of the ALPs who came out and stayed afterward to keep the conversation going.

I believe in my clients before they believe in themselves.

Sometimes, they walk through my door carrying years of doubt.
Doubt about their bodies. Their strength. Or because I’m this many years old. Or I have a bum whatever. Or I used to do xyz.

And they don’t yet know the possibilities of….becoming.

My job is to believe for them.

To see the strength that hasn’t surfaced yet.

To recognize the capacity they can’t quite see.

To challenge the story they’ve been telling themselves.

And then we train.

Rep by rep.
Step by step.
Session by session.
One small win at a time.

Until something shifts.

They stop asking “Do you think I can?”
and start saying “I did.”

That’s the moment.

The goal was never for them to need me to believe in them forever.

It was to believe in them until they believed in themselves.

This little gift from a client who said I saw this because I’ve heard you say this:

“You are stronger than you think.”

And maybe that’s one of the greatest gifts we can give another human being—
the belief that they are capable of more than they currently know.

Until they know it, too.

Always,
Your Corner Woman

One day before 56.

And apparently 55 decided to go out swinging.

Today I squatted 195 for 8, then 195 for 10—both an AMRAP up to RPE 8.

Then I did hack squats, extra pulling volume, and finished with a 150-rep conditioning circuit because apparently my coach has lost his damn mind 🫠😂. Wyatt Christiansen M.S., B.S.

But I did it and feel better than before I started.

So I took this picture.

Because I want to remember this version of me.

Not because I’m trying to look younger.
Not because I’m pretending aging doesn’t happen.
And definitely not because I have everything figured out.

But because I am stronger than I was.

Stronger physically.
Stronger mentally.
More willing to take up space.
More willing to challenge myself.
More willing to listen to my body instead of constantly fighting it.

Tomorrow I turn 56.

And this is exactly why I believe so fiercely in strength training for women.

We don’t train to preserve who we were.
We train to build who we’re becoming.

If this is what getting older looks like, I’ll have seconds.
