Locals' Summer
As the tide rolls in and out, and the seasons begin to shift, the air is changing, and locals’ summer has officially arrived in Laguna Beach. After the wild waves swept through and washed away so much of our shoreline, the coast is looking a little different these days a beautiful reminder that nature is always moving, changing, and reshaping.

Begins with the sun in Libra, which is the sign of balance. The sun enters Libra on the Autumn Equinox (September 22nd), when the day and night are equal length. After this, the nights are longer than the days, with Winter Solstice being the longest night of the year. After that the days increase in length a little at a time until spring Equinox (March 21), when the sun goes into Aries and the days get longer once more.
The natural world responds to this by becoming dormant, many critters hibernate, and trees lose their leaves. Even in our subtropical climate in Southern California many flowers stop blooming, bulbs go back into the ground. People frequently think the plants have died. They are only sleeping. Persephone returns to the underworld for the agreed upon six months (remember those six pomegranate seeds?) and the mother Goddess takes on the aspect of the old wise woman.
This particular October is notable for a Venus retrograde and Mercury retrograde. Venus will appear to move backwards in the sign of Scorpio and will not go forward until November 13th. Venus of course rules love and money and anything we hold to be of value. Traditionally this is said to be a bad time to buy anything expensive, we hear you will get a better deal once venus is direct. Honestly, it really does work out for Christmas shopping! Sometimes these things are very literal. It is also a time when we might be thinking of what truly is important to us. We hear you can tell a person's values by the way they spend theory money. This is a good time to consider this. It might actually bring back a person or memories of those we have loved in the past– for good or for ill. In the sign of Scorpio the emotions may be very deep. Scorpio is the regenerative sign, a good time to bless and release the past.
The moon is new in Libra on Saturday October 10th Libra is the cardinal air sign the key phrase is “I BALANCE”. Interestingly, enough the Libra energy is very attuned to what is out of balance. The moon is a good time to bring conscious mind energy to balance the deep emotional currents I was just discussing. Our mediations and affirmations at this time can focus on the place between excess and insufficiency. Where are we giving too much? What is suffering? And what actions can be taken to create more balance? The balance is of course a way mobile objects are always swinging about, it is not going to become static. But that is what makes it interesting.
On October 15th, Pluto goes direct at 3* of Aquarius. Pluto of course has a 250 year cycle so it affects great tides and currents of history. The United States has been experiencing a Pluto return in case nobody noticed. Yes, rather dramatic. Pluto began this particular retrograde pass on May 6th. 2026 (this year) and for the next seven months it will cross its shadow points and we will review the events of the last six months. New conclusions will be reached, actions taken on a global scale.
On October 23rd, the sun enters the intense water sign of Scorpuio. Now the veil between the world's noticeable thin’s. The spirit world seems much closer. The Scorpio energy is very deep and emotional. Scorpio people get their interesting reputation because many of them are willing to take everything so much further than anyone else. Bad or good, the intensity of the experience seems to be what is of value.
The moon is full on October 25th.This is the Full Moon in Ta**us. This full moon is the opposite number to the weak Full Flower Moon in May, which is the Full Moon in Scorpio under the Ta**us Sun. This moon is called the 'Full Moon of Initiates'. It is a very powerful time for accounts of magic. Affirmations and meditations at this time can focus on what we wish to see regenerated and renewed for the highest good of all.
And then on October 31st, the ancient festival of Samhian, known as halloween, Many peoples favorite holiday. As the veil thins between the worlds we welcome the supernatural elements, by giving them a party. This is of course followed by the day of All Saints on November 1st and the Day of the Dead on November 2nd, where ancestors are honored. The magical energy continues to increase until about Solstice, magic of Christmas anyone? This is to be cherished and enjoyed.
