Today is Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day, dedicated to making sure every woman facing breast cancer knows her options. Reconstruction can include implants, fat grafting, or both, done at the time of mastectomy or later. There's no wrong choice, only the one that's right for you. And in the U.S., most health plans that cover mastectomy are required by law to cover reconstruction too. It's a privilege to help my patients feel confident and whole again. Be safe in the sun, even in the fall! Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a time to celebrate survivors and support every step of their recovery. After breast reconstruction, healing skin and scars need extra protection, and UV rays are still strong in the fall.
Here's how to care for your skin in the sun:
✅ Wear broad-spectrum SPF every day, even when it's cloudy.
✅ Choose UPF 50+ swimsuits that keep healing scars covered.
✅ Pick lighter swimwear colors over black and navy. Dark colors absorb heat, so lighter shades keep you cooler and more comfortable.
New scars are especially sensitive to sunlight, and protecting them helps prevent darkening and sunburn. And this month, the most important reminder of all: schedule your mammogram, do your monthly self-checks, and encourage the women you love to do the same. Early detection saves lives.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a cause I'm deeply passionate about because of the incredible women I care for every day. Every day I have the privilege of helping women through breast reconstruction, from implant-based reconstruction to fat grafting. My goal is always the same: to help each patient feel comfortable, cared for, and confident in her body again.

One of my patients recently shared:

Kicking off breast cancer month by by escorting brave models, who are also survivors of breast cancer. So proud to be able to walk the runway along side my colleagues and patients. Some of the money raised by "to celebrate life" goes towards commonly overlooked needs of underserved women who are diagnosed with breast cancer such as mammograms, transportation to chemotherapy or radiation treatments, or utilities because they can't work during their treatment. Such an amazing organization and so honored to be a part of them! Third time's the charm! After trying to visit blue caves in three different countries and having it canceled because of weather each time, we finally were able to see one in Montenegro! Incredible blue water inside the cave and reflecting up along the ceiling towards the end of the video. Amazing to swim as well!

Walked the walls, kayaked around the walls, and went to hidden bars through doors in the wall! Dubrovnik was even more impressive in person!!
