What’s what thing all of these have in common?? 🤨

They have all been on the “what have you tried before to reach your nutrition/health goals” section of our intake forms.

Here are our thoughts:

🥦 For actual long-term changes to stick, it requires realistic, sustainable, and individualized lifestyle changes.

🥦 It is also crucial to obtain the “why” behind everything - the changes, the nutrition, how your body works, and the lifelong benefits making sustainable changes will bring.

🥦 This also usually entails finding the root of why you aren’t already doing these things. Mindless, stress, emotional, disordered, sadness, happiness, etcccccc eating habits are all things that need to be addressed.

🥦Same with past events, childhood eating trauma, body image issues, restrictive eating, and incorrect nutrition advice. It all has to be properly dealt with so you can move forward.

All of the plans mentioned have elements that MIGHT be science-based and healthy, but as a whole each plan is flawed in its own way. Whether it be extreme restriction, promoting disordered eating, one-size-fits-all, or completely missing the mark on the mental side of eating (which is A HUGE part) there is not one plan that has it all.

When you work with a registered dietitian, possibly a therapist, personal trainer, physical therapist, and others on your care team to create an INDIVIDUALIZED, REALISTIC plan to get you to your goals…. That’s when things stick 🎉

Do you want results FAST?

The best way to do that is to do things right the first time. And doing things right usually means doing it S L O W E R.

Small steps in the right direction lead to consistency, whereas giant leaps become overwhelming & unsustainable leading to failure.

Whether your goal is to improve your relationship with food, to improve your body composition, to improve blood work, or anything else, make the first step something realistic for YOU.

No matter what your health goal might be, reaching out to a dietitian and/or therapist to help guide you and hold you accountable is a great start 🙌

Day to day might not feel as accomplished going slowly as it would have if you went “all-or-nothing”. But a year from that first realistic, sustainable change, you will be well on your way up that mountain, if not already climbing the next! If you just take the “all-or-nothing” leap, however, chances are you’ll fall right back down the mountain and a year from now still be stuck in the same exact place.

Raise your hand if the “Calorie" word controls your life 🙋‍♀️

Stressing about getting the EXACT. SAME. NUMBER. of calories each day is absolutely not worth it.

Our bodies are meant to tell us when we’re hungry and when we’re full. But those cues can get ignored for many reasons. And once they’re ignored enough, it’s hard to trust what our body is trying to tell us.

Instead of focussing on the NUMBER of calories and being stressed about not hitting those exact goals (especially because any caloric goal is an estimate at best) work with a registered dietitian to relearn how to listen to hunger fullness cues and eat a balanced diet to meet your nutrition needs 👍

If someone’s advice to you is “eat less, move more” they’re right on one thing… RUN (away)!!!

Your body is so much more complex than that.

There’s a lot of SCIENCE and EVOLUTION behind it. Humans have a built in survival mechanism that literally contradicts this statement.

If your veggie intake looks like the top half….

You’re doing GREAT on getting the phytonutrients, flavonoids, antioxidants, and micronutrients found in green veggies (which is awesome!).

BUT, you’re missing out on all of the other phytochemicals and micronutrients found in all the other colors!

Red ❤️ is rich in lycopene which helps fight 💪 free radicals and helps protect against cancer & heart disease.

Orange 🧡 and Yellow 💛 are rich in beta cryptothanxin which helps your cells communicate and also helps protect against heart disease.

Green 💚 are rich in things like sulforaphane, isothiocyanates, and insoles which can fight against the cancer-causing effects of carcinogens.

Blue 💙 and Purple 💜 are rich in anthocyanins which slow the effects of aging and prevent blood clots.

White 🤍 are rich in allicin which has been shown to help prevent tumor formation.

CHALLENGE: On your next shopping trip, try to get at least 1 fruit & 1 veggie from each color group to eat throughout the week! Keep in mind, these can be fresh or frozen (we usually get a combination of both!). Comment below or send us a DM of you rainbow of antioxidants so we can share with everyone 🙌

“But I was told to cut out all carbs to control my blood sugar” 🩸

If you’ve ever heard this, UNHEAR IT!

Carbs are not the enemy and carbs in general are not causing blood sugar elevations.

The timing, amount, and type of carbs as well as what you’re eating WITH them are what control blood sugar spikes 😱

TIMING: having your daily amount of carbs all at once creates a HUGE load for your pancreas to accommodate for with insulin. Spreading carbs out throughout the day in relatively even amounts (for the most part) created a more realistic amount of work for the pancreas and limits blood sugar spikes.

AMOUNT: If you’re CONSISTENTLY overdoing the amount of carbs (of any type…) in your diet, you’re giving your body more energy than it needs. Also, your pancreas is again working on overdrive and eventually it’ll get tired 🥵 which can lead to impaired insulin production and response at the cellular level.

TYPE: High fiber, complex carbs digest much more slowly and the glucose is released much more evenly into the blood stream, which causes less of a spike than simple carbs.

PAIRING: Pairing simple carbs with a fat, protein, or fiber slows down how quickly the glucose enters the bloodstream, therefore controlling spikes in blood sugar levels.

So, instead of cutting out one of the three macronutrients in the entire diet, work with a dietitian to figure out how to incorporate them into your diet while still creating healthy blood sugar levels 🩸

Do these numbers affect your day??

If so, this is your reminder that YOU ARE MORE THAN A NUMBER. Your self worth is not the number on the scale or the inches around your waist or the calories consumed/burned or the steps walked in a day or any other number.

Your self worth IS defined by the laughter you create. By the good you do for others. By the self compassion you show for yourself. By the love you have for those around you. By the enjoyment you get from spending time with loved ones and participating in activities you love.

If you’re in a cycle where a NUMBER is defining your self worth. Where the number on the scale makes it a “good” or “bad” day. Where you’re judging your character based on how many steps you had the day before. Or where you’re “successful” or a “failure” based on calories in or out. YOU DESERVE HELP TO FREE YOURSELF FROM THIS TOXIC CYCLE. And you’re not alone 💗

There is peace on the other side of those thoughts. Need help getting there? DM us to see how we can be your support system 💗

Give this client win some LOVE 💗

At Nutrition Aligned, our clients become our family. We care so deeply about their success, no matter how big or small a win might be 🙌

Nutrition and body image can be an incredibly emotional and personal topic. It’s not just carbs, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, and water. It’s not just percent body fat or blood work or malnutrition.

As registered dietitians we understand the deep rooted emotional battles that come with changing lifestyle habits. And we aim to create a space where ALL of our amazing past, current, and future clients feel safe, welcome, supported, and confident to take the journey to better physical and mental health. And know they are never alone.

We never downplay struggles or apprehension, just work WITH our clients to overcome what they have never thought possible and become happier and LIVE their best quality lives 💗

We believe cookie cutters are great for baking, but not for creating a long-lasting nutrition plan for actual success 🥰

Post a 💗 to share some support and share with anyone you know who might need some support along their nutrition or body image journey 💗

Beer and blood sugar is more complex that you might think…

Beer 🍀🍺 is made by fermentation of grains (carbohydrates) and through a long process that we won’t get into here creates alcohol.

Therefore, there are carbs in beer. Light beer contains ~3-5G per serving while regular beer has ~12-15g per serving. This number must be multiplied by how many beers you have (if you have 6 regular beers, that’s 90g of carbs…).

Initially, the carbs are broken down into glucose and released into the blood stream, which can cause spikes in blood sugar.

However, if large amounts of alcohol are consumed, the liver needs to prioritize metabolizing the alcohol and getting rid of toxins. This makes the liver much less effective at releasing glycogen to maintain blood sugar levels in optimal range. This can lead to LOW BLOOD 🩸 SUGAR LEVELS.

Have you ever felt shaky when you wake up from a night of drinking alcohol? That’s a telltale sign your blood sugar likely has dipped too low.

⚠️These effects can be even more dangerous in those with diabetes, especially those taking medications or insulin ⚠️

We’re definitely not here to tell you to skip the green beer today (as long as you’re over 21 and not driving or pregnant!). BUT please drink responsibly and in moderation - your body (and blood sugar) will thank you 😊

Band aids don't heal wounds. They cover them until they heal themselves from the inside out.

Fad diets and "quick fixes" are the band aids of the diet industry. They provide temporary healing/relief, but once that band aid is ripped off (the diet is no longer sustainable) the wound rips back open and that relief is gone. No real healing has happened.

To have true healing, you have to heal the wound from the inside out. That means truly healing all the damage caused by an unhealthy relationship with food or body image caused by years and years of yo-yo dieting and quick fixes and harmful practices and striving to obtain unrealistic ideals.

Once you get to the deepest part of that wound and start to heal, you will notice a difference. Something those quick fixes could never give you. It's painful. But worth it.

And once that wound is healed, closed up the right way, the scar will only be a reminder of the wound that once lived there.

You're not alone. We have been in your shoes. We have healed our own wounds. And we have helped many others heal their relationships with food as well. We're here to help you next.

Let us know if this resonated with you. And share to help others in your life who might be silently struggling with the same wounds themselves.

Consistency over quantity.

The most common way to think is zero to 100. And that leads way too quickly back to square one.

We see this pattern all the time: Going from not exercising at all to going to the gym 5-6 times per week. Eating out most nights a week to meal prepping chicken and broccoli every night. It lasts about 2 weeks. And then life happens.

The best thing you can do is start slow and be CONSISTENT. The best plan is one you can stick to consistently. Regardless of work or stress or celebrations. If that means starting from not working out at all to working out two days per week, that’s a step in the right direction. If it means limiting eating out to 3 days per week instead of 6 or even just making healthier choices when you do go out to eat, that’s a step in the right direction.

Find something YOU can be consistent with. Not your family member. Not your favorite influencer on social media. YOU.

And what you can be consistent with at the beginning can always be built on slowly over time. It’s not usually the end goal, but it’s something.

If you started now increasing exercise days from zero to 2 and making 2-3 SMALL REALISTIC diet changes, just think where you’d be in a month. I promise it’ll be a lot further than if you started something you couldn’t stick with.

But if you yo-yo change it is not going to do anything in the long run. Consistency is key 🔑

Reminder: we only have 3 spots and 3 days left in our New Year, New You promotion! Work with us and get access to many other features for just $275. Invest now in your health!

Are you an athlete with goals for the upcoming year? Whether it be to improve your fitness for sport or achieve better health or anything in between, we help you optimize your nutrition to make these goals a reality.

Don’t fall into the trap of the common mentality at this time of year… “I’ll start after the holidays”. If you let yourself completely ignore nutrition and fitness over the next two months, think about how much HARDER it will be to start your goals in January. So START TODAY! Don’t wait until after the holidays to START. ⛄️

This is a common mistake at this time of year… I’ll start AFTER.

But by thinking this way, you’re really making things 100000x harder on yourself. No matter what your health or fitness goals are.

If you start after the holidays to make changes, you’re definitely going to start in January from a worse place than you are now.

Think about climbing a mountain. You’re halfway up right now. That’s your starting point.

If you continue your current habits (which inherently get worse over the holidays) for the next 3 months, you’re going down the mountain, further from your goal.

So when you start in January, you’re already in a worse spot.

By starting now, creating a plan (which by the way will still let you THOROUGHLY enjoy the holidays) and being held accountable through the next few months, by January you’re going to be a lot further up that mountain than you are now. Even through the holidays. And you’re going to enjoy time with friends and family even more because you have a PLAN and aren’t feeling stressed about what to eat anymore. You’re confident at those company holiday parties. You’re actually a lot happier.
