Before Doctors, New Mexico Had Curanderas

For centuries in Hispanic New Mexico, the person you sent for when someone was sick or a baby was coming was a curandera. New Mexico's historic women site says that before the 1900s the state had very few medical doctors, so the work fell to women who knew local herbs and household remedies, and many of them were also midwives. They pressed to stop bleeding, held heat to an earache, and made broths and salves from plants. In some rural places they still work beside modern medicine, and some have trained in childbirth through the University of New Mexico School of Nursing.

Did someone in your family know the remedies?
