Life is such a precious gift, and one of the most beautiful parts of it is that we have the ability to choose how we want to live. We have free will, and at any moment, we can change direction.
That’s exactly what we did when we decided to leave everything behind and travel the world for over a year.
We hitchhiked through places people told us were dangerous, stayed with strangers who invited us into their homes, shared meals with people from completely different cultures, climbed mountains, slept in nature, and experienced places I never imagined I’d see.
I spent my birthday floating over the ancient ruins of Egypt in a hot air balloon. We rode hot air balloons over Burma, walked among ancient ruins, experienced the World Cup in France, met incredible people in the Netherlands who welcomed us into their home, and somehow got stranded at the Dead Sea in Jordan only to have a stranger give us a ride all the way home.
And after seeing all of that, I was never the same.
It’s hard to explain what happens when you realize how many different ways there are to live. You come home, back to your routines and responsibilities, and suddenly it can feel strange trying to fit back into the same version of life you left behind.
Because now you know there’s more.
And I don’t mean everyone needs to quit their job and travel the world. I mean you can choose differently. You can wake up and decide to be healthier. Spend more time with your children. Change careers. Start the business. Travel. Slow down. Deepen your spirituality. Create a life that actually feels like yours.
Yes, it takes work. It takes sacrifice, practice, grit and determination. But you can change your direction.
Travel taught me that life is so much bigger than the little bubble we sometimes convince ourselves is all there is.
There is more to see. More to experience. More people to meet. More versions of yourself to discover.
I’m not the same after seeing the other side of the world.
And maybe we aren’t meant to stay the same.
What would you choose if you truly believed you were free to create the life you wanted?
