**COOL EXERCISE. BUT IS IT THE RIGHT ONE? 🤔**

Scroll through social media for a few minutes, and you'll find hundreds of creative exercises.

Some look impressive. Some look challenging. And some make you think, *“I should try that!”*

But here's a question worth asking:

**Just because an exercise looks good, how do you know it's good for YOU?**

Think of exercise like a toolbox.

You might have the most expensive, impressive collection of tools available.

But if you don't know which tool the job requires—or how to use it properly—what good is it?

**Exercise works much the same way.**

Take the movement you're watching Chris coach in this video.

It may look like a cool exercise, but there's more happening than simply sliding from side to side.

This movement can challenge lateral hip strength, pelvic stability, and the ability to control your body as your weight shifts.

But here's what's even more important:

**Why was THIS exercise selected for THIS individual at THIS point in time?**

And once selected, is it being performed in a way that accomplishes its intended purpose?

That's where coaching comes in.

A coach should be doing more than demonstrating an exercise or counting repetitions.

They should be evaluating how you're moving, providing feedback, making appropriate adjustments, and determining when you're ready for a different challenge.

Because the right exercise performed poorly may not deliver the intended benefit.

And even a perfectly performed exercise may not be the right choice for your particular needs.

**The exercise is the tool. The coaching is knowing when, why, and how to use it.**

At My Fitness Kitchen, that's the thinking behind our approach to individualized exercise programming.

Not simply giving you something to do.

**Giving you something appropriate to do—and helping you do it well.**

Move Well. Eat Well. Live Well.

**EVER TRIP OVER NOTHING? 😳**

You're walking along when suddenly your foot catches something—or seemingly nothing at all.

You stumble, throw your arms out, take a quick step, and hopefully catch yourself.

But what determines whether you stumble in the first place—or recover your balance before hitting the ground?

**It's not just how strong you are. It's how well your body moves and responds.**

Here's something many people don't realize.

As we age, walking patterns can change. Strides may shorten, walking speed may decrease, and our feet may not clear the ground as effectively.

Declining strength, muscle power, mobility, and coordination can contribute to these changes.

**And here's where walking alone may not be enough.**

Don't misunderstand us. Walking is excellent for your health. Keep getting those daily steps!

But walking primarily practices one familiar movement pattern: moving forward.

Maintaining a healthy walking gait also depends on having the physical capacity to perform it well.

Think about what everyday life demands:

↔️ Stepping sideways to avoid an obstacle.

⬆️ Lifting your foot high enough to clear a curb.

⚡ Reacting quickly when you lose your balance.

🦵 Producing enough force to regain your footing.

These movements involve strength, mobility, balance, coordination, and **muscle power**—the ability to produce force quickly.

And here's something important:

**Muscle power often declines faster than maximum strength as we age.**

That's why resistance training, appropriate balance exercises, multidirectional movement, and safely developing movement speed can complement your daily walks.

At My Fitness Kitchen, we look beyond how much exercise someone does.

We consider which physical capabilities they're maintaining, which may need improvement, and how to address them.

**Walking helps you practice walking. Strength and movement training help support your ability to keep walking well.**

Because the goal isn't simply to move more.

**It's to keep moving well for years to come.**

Move Well. Eat Well. Live Well.

**YOUR KNEES CAN'T GO PAST YOUR TOES. SAYS WHO? 🤔**

You've probably heard that advice before, especially when it comes to squatting.

But here's the problem: **Your body doesn't move one joint at a time.**

Your ankles, knees, and hips work together to help you squat, climb stairs, sit down, and stand back up.

And sometimes, that requires your knees to move beyond your toes.

**So why were we told not to do it?**

Because limiting forward knee movement can reduce certain forces at the knee during exercises like squats.

But here's what often gets overlooked:

**When you restrict movement at one joint, another joint may have to compensate.**

For example, forcing your knees to stay behind your toes during a squat can increase forward trunk lean and shift more of the mechanical demand toward your hips and lower back.

You're not necessarily eliminating stress. You're redistributing it.

And that's where the conversation gets interesting.

**Is allowing your knees past your toes always appropriate?**

Not necessarily.

Your ankle mobility, strength, joint health, injury history, comfort, and the specific exercise all matter.

For one person, allowing greater forward knee travel may be perfectly appropriate.

For another, temporarily limiting that movement may be useful while addressing pain, mobility restrictions, or rebuilding strength.

**The goal isn't to force everyone into the same movement pattern.**

It's to understand how YOUR body moves and determine what's appropriate for you.

At My Fitness Kitchen, that's part of what coaching involves: looking beyond blanket exercise rules and making informed decisions based on the individual.

Because good coaching isn't about memorizing a list of things you're never allowed to do.

**It's about understanding WHY, WHEN, and HOW to do them.**

Move Well. Eat Well. Live Well.

**EVERYONE KNOWS YOU NEED PROTEIN. BUT HOW MUCH? 🤔**

Unless you've been living under a rock, you've seen it everywhere: protein bars, shakes, cereals—even foods that never mentioned protein before.

But how much does YOUR body need? And does the source matter?

**1️⃣ HOW MUCH?**

There's no universal number. For many active adults, roughly **0.55–0.9 grams per pound of body weight daily** (1.2–2.0 g/kg) is a useful starting range—not a personal prescription.

Age, activity, health, goals, and body composition matter. Estimating lean body mass or using a realistic goal weight can help tailor the discussion, particularly when body weight alone is misleading.

With aging, muscles may become less responsive to protein's muscle-building signal—often called **anabolic resistance**. That makes adequate protein and resistance training especially important.

But here's the part many miss: **periodically reassess your estimated lean body mass, strength, and function.** Are your efforts producing the changes you want? One measurement doesn't tell the whole story.

**2️⃣ DOES THE SOURCE MATTER?**

Absolutely. Protein supplies amino acids, including essential ones your body can't make. Leucine helps trigger muscle protein synthesis.

🥚 **Eggs, dairy, whey, fish, poultry, and meat:** Complete, generally highly digestible proteins.

🌱 **Plant proteins:** Soy is also complete; beans, lentils, peas, and grains can contribute meaningfully across a varied diet.

⚠️ **Collagen:** Counts toward protein grams, but lacks tryptophan and is a poor stand-alone choice for building muscle.

A “20g protein” label doesn't tell you everything about protein quality.

**3️⃣ MAKE IT WORK FOR YOU.**

Look at what you already eat. How much protein are you getting, from which foods, and across which meals? Then adjust in ways you'll actually sustain.

At My Fitness Kitchen, coaching means more than giving you a target. It means helping you put it into practice, measure progress, and adjust when needed.

**YOUR BALANCE DOESN'T COME WITH A WARNING LIGHT. ⚠️**

One day, stepping off a curb, walking down stairs, or navigating an uneven sidewalk feels completely natural.

Then something changes.

Maybe you catch yourself reaching for the railing more often.

Maybe you feel a little less steady getting dressed while standing.

Or perhaps you stumble over something that wouldn't have bothered you a few years ago.

**These seemingly small changes deserve your attention.**

Balance isn't just about standing on one foot.

It's the result of several systems working together, including your muscles, vision, inner ear, nervous system, and your body's ability to sense its position and respond to movement.

And as we age, changes in these systems can make everyday activities more challenging.

But here's the encouraging part:

**Balance is something you can work to improve.**

Appropriate strength training, balance exercises, coordination work, and practicing movements that challenge your stability can all play an important role.

**And why wait until you've experienced a fall to make it a priority?**

The stronger, more stable, and better conditioned you are, the better prepared your body may be to respond when something unexpected happens.

That might mean catching yourself before a fall, regaining your footing, or having the strength and mobility to get back up.

And if a fall does result in an injury, maintaining your physical fitness may also provide a better foundation for rehabilitation and recovery.

**The goal isn't just to reduce your risk of falling. It's to build a more capable body for whatever life throws your way.**

At My Fitness Kitchen, we believe healthy aging isn't simply about adding years to your life. It's about maintaining the physical capabilities that help you enjoy those years.

And that includes something as fundamental as feeling confident and steady on your feet.

**Don't wait for a warning sign to start preparing your body for what's ahead.**

**THE HARDEST PART WASN'T THE WORKOUT.**

*It was walking through the door.*

For some people, getting started with exercise isn't as simple as deciding to join a gym.

It's the questions running through their minds before they ever arrive.

*What if I'm too out of shape?*

*What if I can't keep up?*

*What if everyone else knows what they're doing except me?*

*What if I try again and fail again?*

And sometimes, the biggest concern is discovering just how far their health and fitness have slipped.

Here's something we've learned from working with adults at My Fitness Kitchen:

**The people who may benefit most from getting started are sometimes the very people who find it hardest to begin.**

Not because they lack motivation, but because starting means confronting uncertainty, past frustrations, and sometimes fear.

**That's exactly why we begin with a complimentary Strategy Session.**

It's an opportunity to sit down, talk about your goals, discuss your concerns, understand where you're starting, and explore what a realistic path forward could look like.

No pressure to keep up with anyone.

No expectation that you need to get in shape first.

And no requirement to have everything figured out before you arrive.

**Our philosophy is simple: Start with a plan, not a contract.**

Because the first step toward improving your health and fitness should provide clarity, direction, and confidence about what comes next.

If you've been thinking about getting started but something keeps holding you back, we'd welcome the opportunity to have that first conversation.

**Schedule your complimentary Strategy Session at My Fitness Kitchen.**

Let's talk about where you are, where you'd like to go, and how we can help you get there.

**HARDER ISN'T ALWAYS BETTER.**

Have you ever walked into a workout feeling great one day, but the next time, the same workout feels twice as difficult?

There's a reason for that.

Your body doesn't show up in exactly the same condition every day.

Sleep, stress, recovery, nutrition, and even what you've been doing outside the gym can influence how you perform.

That's why an effective exercise program shouldn't be treated like a checklist where every workout must be harder than the last.

Sometimes the right decision is to:

➡️ **PUSH HARDER** — When you're moving well, recovering appropriately, and ready for a greater challenge.

⬅️ **PULL BACK** — When fatigue, soreness, or other factors suggest your body would benefit from a lighter workload.

↔️ **ADJUST TODAY** — When changing an exercise, its range of motion, resistance, or another variable allows you to train more appropriately.

Here's what often gets overlooked:

**The exercise itself is only part of the equation. Knowing how much, how hard, and when to adjust matters just as much.**

At My Fitness Kitchen, that's part of what our coaches pay attention to during every session. Not simply what exercise is next, but how the person in front of us is responding.

Because the goal isn't to make every workout your hardest.

**The goal is to make every workout purposeful.**

Move Well. Eat Well. Live Well.

10/14/2026

As you age, strength isn’t the only thing you lose.
And we’re not talking about balance or mobility.

We’re talking about POWER.

Strength is your ability to produce force.
Power is your ability to produce that force quickly.

And that matters because life doesn’t always give you time to slowly create strength.

You catch your toe on a curb. You need to react.
You start to lose your balance. You need to take a quick step.
You get up from a low chair, climb stairs, swing a golf club or suddenly need to change direction.
That requires more than strength.

But there’s another side of power we sometimes overlook:

It’s not only about speeding up. It’s also about slowing down.

Your body needs to be able to accelerate, react — and then decelerate and control that movement.

Think stepping down from a curb, quickly changing direction or catching yourself after an unexpected movement.

As we age, our ability to produce force rapidly can decline. That’s one reason appropriate power training deserves a place alongside strength, mobility and balance.

Does that mean everyone should start jumping on boxes?
Absolutely not.

Power training should meet you where you are.

Build the foundation. Then appropriately introduce movements that challenge you to produce force more quickly — and control and decelerate that force safely.

It doesn’t need to dominate your workouts.
But it shouldn’t disappear from them either.

That’s another difference between simply exercising and being coached:

knowing what to train, when to introduce it, how much you need and how to progress it.

Because healthy aging isn’t just about having strength.
It’s about being able to use and control it when life demands it.

Move well. Eat well. Live well.

The GLP-1 may change your appetite. What are you changing with it?

For many people, that’s part of the appeal.

Less hunger. Less food noise. Feeling satisfied with less food. And ultimately, an easier path toward losing weight.

But here’s the bigger opportunity:

While the medication is helping change your appetite, what are you building alongside it?

Because eating less doesn’t just mean fewer calories
It can also mean fewer opportunities to get the nutrition your body needs.
That’s why awareness becomes even more important.

Are you getting enough protein to help support and preserve muscle?

Are the foods you are eating providing enough nutritional value — protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients — rather than simply focusing on eating less?

And when food alone isn’t covering those needs, targeted supplementation may help fill the gaps.

Then there’s the other side of the equation.

Are you strength training and giving your body a reason to maintain muscle?
Are you moving regularly?
Are you paying attention to hydration, sleep and recovery?
And are you building routines that are livable enough to continue?

Because the goal shouldn’t simply be to become a lighter version of yourself.

The bigger opportunity is to create an environment that helps you become stronger, healthier and more capable as the weight comes off.

That’s where coaching can complement medical weight loss.

The medication has its role.

Our role is helping you address what happens around it — movement, strength, nutrition, body composition, accountability and sustainable routines.

GLP-1s can be a powerful tool.

Don’t just use the opportunity to eat less. Use it to build better.

Move well. Eat well. Live well.

10/12/2026

1 hour gets all the attention. But what about the other 23?

Your workout matters. It provides the stimulus that challenges your body to adapt.
But once the workout ends, you still have most of the day ahead of you.

So what should you be doing with those other 23 hours?

First, don't try to make them perfect. That's not realistic, and it's not necessary.

Instead, start paying attention to a few things that can support the work you're already doing:

Move.
Your workout shouldn't be the only time you move all day. Walk. Take the stairs. Work around the house. Get outside. Look for reasons to move instead of reasons not to.

Eat with purpose.
Give your body the nutrition it needs, including adequate protein to help support and maintain muscle.

Recover.
Training provides the challenge. Your body also needs sleep, hydration and recovery to adapt to that challenge.

And perhaps most importantly — build awareness.

You don't need to obsess over every meal, every step or every hour of sleep.
But what gets your attention has a much better chance of being managed.

That's why coaching shouldn't end when the workout does.

We may only see you for a few hours each week, but the goal is to help you build habits and make better decisions during all the hours we don't.

Because one great workout can't carry an entire lifestyle.
But combine good training with better choices throughout the rest of your week, consistently over time?

That's where things start to add up.

Move well. Eat well. Live well.
