🎃 Halloween fun can build skills, too—and it doesn't have to cost anything!

Try a few of these at home:
🎃 Draw a pumpkin face and talk about different emotions
🕷️ Create a hallway “spider web” obstacle course with yarn or tape
🔎 Go on a Halloween scavenger hunt and describe what you find
🧙 Make a pretend potion and practice following/sequencing directions
👻 Play “What's in the mystery bag?” and describe objects without looking

Today is International Stuttering Awareness Day. 💬

One of the simplest ways we can support someone who stutters is also one of the most important:

Give them time.

Listen to what they're saying—not how quickly or fluently they're saying it. Maintain natural eye contact. Don't finish their sentences. And resist reminders to “slow down” or “take a breath.”

Everyone deserves the time and space to communicate in their own way.

The Big Show is coming to Lawrence! ✨
Lisa Graves is proud to volunteer with Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters, and we’re excited to help spread the word about one of their biggest events of the year.

The Big Show is happening October 30 at Maceli’s and brings together fashion, food, drinks, a silent auction, and plenty of fun—all while supporting one-to-one mentorship for youth facing adversity in Douglas County.

Your ticket includes a runway show featuring local models and fashions from Lawrence retailers, w**e and b**r, hors d’oeuvres, and access to the silent auction.

It’s a fun night out for an even better reason: helping local kids reach their full potential. 💙

Good vision plays an important role in how children learn, play, communicate, and interact with the world around them.

See To Learn is a preventive program designed to help identify potential vision concerns before they interfere with a child’s early learning. Through the program, parents can schedule a FREE vision assessment for their 3-year-old with a participating optometrist.

As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, we're celebrating the many languages, cultures, and voices that make our communities stronger.

And here's an important reminder for multilingual families: learning more than one language does not cause a speech or language disorder.

Children can grow up learning and communicating in multiple languages—and families shouldn't feel they need to give up the language that connects their child to family, culture, and community. 💙

👂 Could hearing be affecting speech and language development?

Children learn speech and language in large part by listening to the sounds and words around them. Even mild or fluctuating hearing loss can make it harder to hear certain speech sounds, follow directions, learn new words, or participate in conversations.

That's one reason hearing screening can be an important part of evaluating speech and language concerns.

AAC—Augmentative and Alternative Communication—includes the many ways people communicate in addition to or instead of spoken words. That can include gestures, pictures, communication boards, signs, or speech-generating devices.

AAC isn't about giving up on speech. It's about giving someone a way to communicate right now while supporting communication development.

Learning never stops—especially when it helps us provide better care. 💙

Lisa Graves recently attended the Kansas Speech-Language-Hearing Association Annual Conference and is continuing her professional development at the Child Apraxia Treatment Workshops at San Diego State University.

Ongoing education gives our clinicians opportunities to explore current research, strengthen clinical skills, and bring evidence-based approaches back to the children, adults, and families we serve.

We’re excited to put that learning into practice!
