🧠 The Science Behind Mental Health: Your Brain's Chemical Messengers

Your brain communicates using neurotransmitters, tiny chemical messengers that help regulate your thoughts, emotions, sleep, and behavior.

💙 Mental health is brain health, and understanding the science is one step toward reducing stigma and finding the right treatment.

🧠 Did you know that up to 75% of people diagnosed with depression also experience anxiety?

If you have ever felt completely exhausted yet entirely unable to calm your mind—a state often described as "tired but wired"—you are not alone.

Because both conditions are heavily triggered by chronic stress, they share a massive overlap in physical and emotional symptoms. When your brain is overloaded, it frequently triggers:

📉 Physical Burnout: Unexplained body aches, digestive issues, and severe sleep disruptions.
⚡ Emotional Strain: Constant irritability, restlessness, and difficulty concentrating or taking action.

Experiencing these overlapping symptoms does not mean you are broken—it means your nervous system is working overtime to protect you from stress. The good news is that because the brain circuits overlap, modern treatments like targeted psychotherapy and neuromodulation can actively treat both conditions at the exact same time.

School anxiety can look like refusal, tears, stomach aches, anger, shutdown or a child simply saying, “I don’t want to go.”

But underneath those visible behaviours, the brain’s alarm system may already be working incredibly hard.

The amygdala is constantly scanning for possible threat. If school has repeatedly become associated with sensory overload, difficult work, social uncertainty, separation, masking, fear of getting things wrong or feeling overwhelmed, the brain can begin to anticipate that difficulty before it has even happened.

And this is where we can see anxiety start to spread.

First it might be one lesson.
Then entering the classroom.
Then getting dressed.
Then the night before.
Eventually, simply thinking about school may be enough to activate the stress response.

This is why identifying what is driving the anxiety for this particular child matters so much.

When I work with a child, I’m not simply asking, “How do we get them into school?” I’m asking, “What is activating their alarm system — and what can we change, support or help them learn to manage?”

The earlier we understand the why, the greater our opportunity to prevent that alarm response becoming stronger and more generalised.

School anxiety often becomes most visible in the morning — but the work of supporting it starts long before the school gates.

For some children, uncertainty, separation, worries about the day ahead or previous difficult experiences can mean anxiety is already building before they even leave home.

Small, predictable steps can help.

Preparing them for what to expect, keeping connection strong, acknowledging their worries, creating a consistent goodbye and noticing the small wins can all help reduce some of that uncertainty.

And importantly, these strategies work best alongside curiosity about what is actually driving the anxiety. If we understand the trigger, we are much better placed to support the child rather than simply trying to push through the behaviour.

📌 Save this post for those difficult school mornings.

**Not every scar is visible. And not every person who self-harms wants to die.**

Self-harm is often misunderstood. It is **not usually about seeking attention**. For many people, it is a way of coping with emotional pain that feels impossible to put into words.

People may self-harm because of:
🖤 Childhood trauma
🖤 Physical, emotional or sexual abuse
🖤 Feeling numb or disconnected
🖤 Overwhelming emotions
🖤 Anxiety or panic
🖤 Depression
🖤 Shame and low self-worth
🖤 PTSD or Complex PTSD
🖤 Feeling out of control
🖤 Wanting temporary relief from emotional pain

When someone self-harms, the brain can release endorphins—our body's natural pain-relieving chemicals. This can temporarily reduce both physical and emotional distress, which is one reason the behaviour can become difficult to stop. It doesn't mean the person enjoys being hurt. It often means they are trying to survive overwhelming emotional pain.

**The statistics are heartbreaking:**
• Around **1 in 10 adults in England** report having self-harmed at some point in their lives, and among young adults aged 16–24, the figure is **over 1 in 5**.
• Research consistently shows that many people who self-harm have experienced trauma, abuse, or significant emotional distress.

If you know someone who self-harms, try not to judge them. Instead, listen. Be patient. Let them know they are not alone.

💛 Healing is possible.
💛 Recovery is possible.
💛 Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
