If you were to visit the Medical Intermediate Cardiac Care (MICC) unit at Saint Luke's Hospital of Kansas City, you might notice a particular theme on the floor: otters. Why, you ask? There is a good reason (besides it being Travis Kelce’s favorite animal). 🦦

“We are like a group of otters—also known as a raft—because we hold onto each other to help navigate the waters, whether they’re smooth or not so smooth,” said Mary, the MICC nurse manager. “No matter what, being Team Otter means we've got each other."

Otters sticking together is a shared mindset of Saint Luke's teamwork and culture, no matter what the day brings. 🌊

From ignoring new symptoms to delaying health screenings, these are some things we’re leaving behind this spooky season. 🎃

On New Year’s Day 2022 in their Boise, Idaho, home, Elea noticed an indentation on her breast. Her doctor confirmed the diagnosis: breast cancer. While Elea was declared cancer-free by spring of 2023, her quarterly scan in the fall showed she had developed metastatic (stage 4) breast cancer.

Boise’s local resources were thin, so Elea started looking beyond local care. That's how she came across the Journey of Courage and Hope Retreat—and then Dr. Timothy Pluard, director of Saint Luke's Cancer Institute, who is now her primary oncologist despite living more than 1,100 miles away. As Elea knows firsthand, access to this level of care for metastatic breast cancer is life-changing.

Elea’s visits to Saint Luke’s Hospital Koontz Center for Advanced Breast Cancer bring together oncology, psychology, nutrition, social work, and physical therapy—clinical coordination that makes Elea’s monthly trips from Idaho to Kansas City worth it.

It feels like the beginning of a new era for Elea and her family. She wants to be defined by her strength, not her tragedies.

“We've told this cancer story so much and lived it for so long that we want to find a new story,” she says. “The thing is, you're the storyteller. I feel like a new chapter is starting, that this is the turning point. And I do hope Dr. Pluard and the Koontz Center can be a big part of that.”

The Koontz Center's purpose is clear: to help patients with metastatic breast cancer live longer, while living better. For Elea, that means staying connected to her family, receiving attentive care, and continuing to write a story defined by strength.

Breathing is essential in every part of health care. This team helps make it happen. 🫁

Respiratory therapists care for patients of all ages with a wide range of heart-and-lung conditions. They manage ventilators, administer oxygen therapy, clear obstructed airways, and monitor patients closely to recognize changes in their respiratory status. They are there for the critical moments, the quiet victories, and every breath in between.

To every respiratory therapist and respiratory care professional: Thank you for being the breath of hope, a source of strength in an emergency, and a voice of compassion at the bedside. Your work is essential, your impact is immeasurable, and the difference you make reaches far beyond the bedside. Happy National Respiratory Care Week! 💙

It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and our teams are proudly wearing pink! 🎀

Today, caregivers and staff at Saint Luke’s hospitals across the Kansas City region, along with BJC Health's East Region hospitals in the St. Louis area, participated in “BJC Goes Pink” Day to honor and support everyone whose lives have been affected by breast cancer. Each pink outfit represents a commitment to early detection, regular screenings, and standing by one another through every step of care.

Have you scheduled your annual mammogram? Use the link in the comments to make your appointment.

Breast radiologist Dr. Ruby Meierotto is seeing younger patients in Saint Luke's High Risk Breast Clinic—some in their early twenties—who either have breast cancer or want to understand their risk level to take proactive steps to prevent it.

Some breast cancer risk factors cannot be changed, but some can, such as lifestyle changes and medication. Assessing your specific circumstances with a provider is step one. Hear Dr. Meierotto discuss it in depth on Health News You Can Use.

Saint Luke's Mid America Heart Institute recently installed the Radiaction radiation protection system, becoming the first cardiovascular structural lab in the United States to implement this technology.

The system’s lead shielding moves with the imaging camera to help minimize radiation exposure during procedures, protecting both patients and clinical teams. Beyond enhancing radiation protection, the technology may reduce the amount of lead staff need to wear, helping alleviate the physical strain and musculoskeletal issues associated with wearing heavy protective gear over time.

It’s one example of how innovation at Saint Luke’s advances patient care while supporting the health and well-being of the teams who make it possible. 💙
