October is Blindness Awareness Month!👁️💙

What if technology could read your mail aloud, describe what's around you, or help you access information with just your voice? That's the power of assistive technology!

At the Warren County Board of DD SMART Studio, we're highlighting some incredible tools that help individuals who are blind or have low vision navigate everyday life with greater independence!

✨ Odyssey & LyriQ – Turn printed text into spoken words.
✨ Meta Glasses – Offer hands-free assistance with identifying objects and exploring surroundings.
✨ OrCam Read – Make printed and digital text accessible through audio.

From reading a favorite book to completing everyday tasks, technology is helping break down barriers and opening doors to new possibilities!

The SMART Studio is an interactive space where individuals, families, and support teams can see assistive technology in action, try out devices, and discover solutions that support independence in everyday life.

Email [email protected] to schedule your visit! We can't wait to show you what technology can do!

This week’s Journeys to Employment Spotlight features Jacob, who has worked as a Culinary Aide at Otterbein Senior Living for nearly 11 years. His responsibilities include washing dishes, bussing tables, delivering meals to residents’ rooms, and transporting meals to independent living residents’ homes. He enjoys his position and the interactions he has with the residents.

As a graduate of the Culinary Program at Warren County Career Center, Jacob developed the skills and passion for cooking that continue to inspire him today. In 2023, he began sharing that passion as a content creator by starting his own YouTube channel, where he creates cooking videos and restaurant reviews. You can find him on YouTube by searching “Cookfromjacob” or by clicking the link below. Those interested in trying his recipes can purchase them on Etsy. All of his links are available on his YouTube channel page.

Looking ahead, one of Jacob’s goals is to start a business bottling and selling his own sauces. While he is still in the early stages of this venture, he is determined to make this dream a reality.

When Jacob isn’t working, he enjoys traveling and spending time with friends. He recently traveled to Florida to visit a friend and is already planning his next trip to a different destination.

Jacob’s dedication to his work at Otterbein and the creative ways he continues to pursue his goals are inspiring, and he should be proud of everything he has accomplished.

This week’s Journeys to Employment Monthly Spotlight features Jen. She has been employed by Goodwill Industries for 10 years. She initially began working in their vocational training program, but she was soon offered a permanent position in their retail store. Jen is responsible for stocking merchandise, maintaining the sales floor, assisting customers, accepting donations, and checking out customers at the cash register. One of Jen's favorite responsibilities is "pulling colors." All merchandise is color coded and through this process older merchandise is removed from the sales floor to make room for new inventory.

Jen’s assistant manager Robin stated that Jen has more seniority than most employees. She also stated that Jen is always on task and they never have to worry because she consistently works her entire shift and her work is accurate.

In August of 2022, Goodwill Easterseals Miami Valley honored Jen with their Employment Independence Award. This was a great honor to Jen. After receiving her award, the attached video was played at the Fraze Music Center in July 2022.

Jen lives independently with a roommate and her cat Happy. She adopted Happy from the Humane Society. When she is not working, Jen enjoys shopping, going to movies, visiting Kings Island, and she loves traveling to see friends and family. Her last big trip was flying to Los Angeles to visit her mother.

Jen is a reliable and consistent employee who takes pride in her quality of work. Her strong work ethic and commitment to excellence are qualities that employers highly value.
