What makes you feel confident as a parent?

During the most recent episode on The Nested Parent Podcast I sat down with Kaila Maguire of and we discussed how you can decrease the overwhelm when preparing for birth and postpartum.

From childbirth classes (which she teaches), to how to build a community, we talked about when to start the preparation, and most importantly....how to learn the art of slowing down.

A growing body of evidence supports the effectiveness and safety of mind-body therapies for children. Meditation and yoga can be very helpful to reduce stress and improve long term self-regulation. Also less stress can mean less anxiety around bedtime!

When teaching this new skill it can be helpful to do meditation and yoga with your child to teach them about body awareness. Bonus: itโ€™s a calming moment for you too!

Start with breathing- choose an animal ๐Ÿฆ’ ๐Ÿป ๐Ÿฆ! Then have your child (especially toddler age 2-4) put a stuffed animal on their tummy to watch their belly move with each breath. Full credit to for teaching me this trick!

Our favorite way to meditate right now is with our because it's screen free and empowers independence. Get yours today using code: nestedsleep for discount!

For older kiddos progressive muscle relaxation can be a good way to focus the mind. It is based upon the simple practice of tensing, or tightening, one muscle group at a time

What is included in a personalized sleep plan?

Hi ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿผ, Iโ€™m Kelsey, owner of , and I help busy parents develop smooth bedtime routines & later mornings through 1:1 sleep support!

A sleep plan isn't just outlining the sleep training method, it also includes:

๐Ÿ“‘ A comprehensive evaluation of your child's history (from reflux to behavioral challenges)

โ˜€ An environmental assessment and recommendations (sound, light, and room setup)

๐Ÿคฑ๐Ÿผ A nursing or bottle feeding plan (nutrition and sleep are very related during the first year and this will be a strong area of focus)

โฐ Sleep schedule changes (we often start and end on a different nap/bedtime schedule once independent sleep is in place)

๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿผ Developmentally appropriate play time activities to stretch those wake windows or add to quiet time

And most importantly, a real person to help you make changes when normal things in life come up such as illness, grandparent visits, or daycare schedules.

Of course we are kicking off the sugar season with National chocolate day! And soon your little goblin will be inhaling all their Halloween candy โ€ฆand before we know it holiday parties will follow. Tis the season right??

We all have heard that sugar can make it harder to fall asleep which is definitely true, but did you also know it can cause more overnight arousals too? Yup, research shows those who consumed diets with more sugar spent less time in deep, slow-wave sleep.

But Iโ€™m a find your balance kind of mama so enjoy some sweets on special holiday days, but keep the sugar at bay most evenings to help keep your nest a rested one!

Let's get the facts straight about sleep training! I'm all about evidence-based parenting, so I'm here to break down the most common sleep training methods, the right time to start, and when to seek extra support.

Hi ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿผ, Iโ€™m Kelsey, owner of , and I help busy parents develop smooth bedtime routines & later mornings through 1:1 sleep support!

๐Ÿ‘ถ Starting with the basics: Does every baby need sleep training? No! It's necessary when your little one is 4-6 months+ and has trouble falling asleep solo or wakes multiple times in the night (8-12 hours). Occasional wake-ups are fine, but 3-4 times? Not ideal for anyone's well-being.

๐Ÿ˜… I won't dive into the controversy here because, hey, parenthood is YOUR journey! Sleep training is an option, but it's not a mandate. You decide what works for your family! It can teach kids to snooze peacefully without harming the parent-child bond long-term (Gradisar et al., 2016).

๐ŸŒ™ Sleep Training Methods:

1โƒฃ Controlled Crying (Progressive Waiting): Check on your baby at intervals.
2โƒฃ Chair Method: Stay by their side, moving the chair gradually.
3โƒฃ Pick up/put Down: Gently soothe a drowsy baby without full-on crying (only recommended for younger infants).

Nightmares vs Night terrors!

Hi ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿผ, Iโ€™m Kelsey, owner of , and I help busy parents develop smooth bedtime routines & later mornings through 1:1 sleep support!

So what is the difference??

A nightmare is a bad dream (most often occurring in the second half of the night) that your child is fearful of and can describe.

A night terror typically occurs in the first half of the night often with screaming and thrashing for 30 seconds to 5 minutes.

Responding๐Ÿ˜ฑ

For a nightmare you offer validation and reassurance in the moment and if recurrent discuss fears during the daytime.

For night terrors, keep your child safe and try to avoid waking your child. Prevent causing night terrors by getting a good amount of sleep every night.

If either nightmares or night terrors are occurring frequently reach out for help as neither should be a frequent occurrence.

Today is world narcolepsy day! To honor this day I wanted to raise awareness about what narcolepsy can look like in kids.

Common presenting symptoms can include:
๐Ÿ˜ด excessive and irresistible sleepiness (often times falling asleep in class)
๐Ÿ˜ด cataplexy (episodes of muscle weakness during periods of strong emotion)
๐Ÿ˜ด hypnagogic hallucinations (vivid dreams at sleep onset)
๐Ÿ˜ด sleep paralysis (a momentary inability to move the body as one is drifting off to sleep or upon waking up)

Although relatively rare in general, narcolepsy is one of the more common causes of disabling daytime sleepiness beginning in adolescence or even earlier in some cases.

If your child is sleeping well at night and is still overly tired during the day itโ€™s time to explore reasons with your childโ€™s doctor.

Letโ€™s raise awareness and stop calling kids lazy or blaming parents for not giving them sleep at night ๐Ÿ™Œ

Getting ready for back to school is a great time of year for assessing how much sleep your child needs!

Many young children are at the low end of the recommended daily amount of sleep, with about 1 in 5 not even meeting that threshold.

A lot of this is due to a lack of awareness of how much sleep is required and the other aspects may be related to trouble falling asleep or challenges with routine.

Here is a quick snapshot of how much sleep your little one needs!

๐Ÿ˜ด Baby (4-11 months) 12-16 hours (includes naps)
๐Ÿ˜ด Toddler (1-2 years) 11-14 hours (includes nap)
๐Ÿ˜ด Preschool ( 3-5 years) 10-13 hours
๐Ÿ˜ด School Age (6-12 years) 9-12 hours
๐Ÿ˜ด Teens (12+) 8-10 hours

Create the relationships!

Back in December I chatted with a mama who just had her baby. He was a few weeks old and in the NICU. This mama knew that sleep was vital for her health (side note: itโ€™s vital for ALL our bodies, but she was just super aware of her needs-amazing ๐Ÿ‘)

We chatted, developed a plan, and she started her journey with my newborn guide. We kept on touch and just this last month she reached out because sleep had gone down the tubes! Baby hit the 4 month sleep regression hard, had back to back illnesses, and sleep was no longer on track.

So this month we worked 1:1 with virtual sleep consulting to get this little guy sleeping well and get mom and dad the rest they need!

Heโ€™s now falling asleep quickly at bedtime, down to one nightly wake (normal for developmental age) and on a more predictable nap schedule.

Long story short: develop the relationships even before you need them โค๏ธ

Wouldnโ€™t it be amazing to just send an email to say โ€œyup ready for helpโ€?

Iโ€™ve now added free 15 minute prenatal consults to my call schedule! This is a call so we can chat about your sleep goals, visions, and make sure we are a good fit even before you need me.

Will you let me be a part of your parenting team?

This month for , a sleep consulting group I am an educator for, I reviewed safe sleep guidelines across the world!

There can be many differences that come up across countries, borders, cultures etc., but the two main similarities that came up across 9 industrialized countries were:

๐Ÿ’ค Supine (back) sleep is key

๐Ÿ’ค Smoke exposure avoidance significantly reduces SIDS risk

So while many things across our nations is different, keeping babies safely sleeping is a priority that we all care about!

Tag with your safe sleep images this weekend so we can keep showing families how to keep babies safe.

It's Positive Discipline Wednesday so let's discuss another positive discipline tool!

This week let's discuss tools for when you child says they are BORED! I know I need this and I bet you do too.

One of the biggest mistakes some parents and teachers make, when they decide to use Positive Discipline, is becoming too permissive because they donโ€™t want to be punitive.

๐’๐ก๐จ๐ฐ ๐…๐š๐ข๐ญ๐ก: "I can see that you are bored and disappointed there is no activity right now" , Then it is respectful to have faith in children that they can survive disappointment and develop a sense of capability in the process. Offer support through Validating Feelings or giving a Hug, but not by rescuing or fixing.

๐“๐š๐ค๐ž ๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐ž ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ : Adults often expect children to accomplish tasks for which there has not been adequate training. Does your child know where to go or what options there are when they feel a certain way (boredom)?

Instead of telling children what to do, ask curiosity questions. "Where is the place we go when we feel bored?"

๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ: It is almost always more expedient to solve problems for our children. When your child says they are bored take a deep breath yourself and know that this is not an urgent need. It's ok to sit in boredom as they search for a solution!

When children are involved in the decision making process they are much more eager to cooperate and find the solutions for boredom.

What boredom solutions have your kids come up with?

Summer- a busy time for s'mores, vino verde, and .....potty training.

It sounds silly, but June is actually national potty training month! Hotter weather means lighter clothes, and lighter pieces are better for increasing bodily awareness when your child has any bladder/bowel sensations, or an inevitable accident.

So if your kiddo is ready then this is a good time to jump in! But how do you know when your child ( and YOU) are ready? Check out today's new blog on "How to prepare for night time potty training! ". Link in bio!

With father's day coming up plus busy travel seasons a successful day trip with babies and toddlers in tow is key!

In the newborn time period, I felt very locked down between changing diapers, nursing, and just full-on new parenting. But after a few months I was ready to get out and start exploring a bit!

Sometimes we would not be going far, but I didn't know what essentials to bring and what to leave home.

It's Positive Discipline Wednesday so let's discuss another positive discipline tool!

This week is "Solutions" vs "Consequences"

A consequence or punishment of some kind is typically given in response to a child not obeying or following the rules. We feel like order has been lost and therefore in order to make your child understand something went wrong you give a consequence so they will obey the next time.

The problem is that if it works it is because of fear and intimidation, not because they adopted principles of right and wrong (you know how they act when you arenโ€™t around!)

Consider the long term results. In the long term we want children to help with solutions and not need to pull out consequences or punishments all day long as parents.

When children are involved in the decision making process they are much more eager to cooperate. You can even start this at age 3 years of age in a simple manner!

What solutions have your kids come up with?

Father's day is just under two weeks away!

I hear it all the time from new Dads "How can I help?". Especially in the early days, it can be hard to navigate who does what childcare tasks.

Research shows that starting a strong foundation with both parents involved in the bedtime routine and overnight sleep care will set up the whole family for sleep success, paternal bonding, parent confidence, and even greater marital satisfaction!

How do you and your partner tackle bedtime tasks in your home?

Rachel has offered to answer 3 parenting questions that would benefit YOUโ€ฆ What do you want me to ask her?

You can ask her anything parenting-related, but she's especially helpful in the following areas:

Diffusing โ€œdramaโ€ -- big emotions, power struggles, helping children who worry about making mistakes or who get easily upset

Motivating children to act responsible -- clean up, do homework, get off of their devices

Supporting anxious children -- how to respond to kidsโ€™ stress and overwhelm, and how to foster overall resilience

Fostering healthy self esteem -- how to ensure kids truly value themselves

Post your questions below and Iโ€™ll choose 3 to ask based on the most popular topics!

It's Positive Discipline Wednesday so let's discuss another positive discipline tool!

This week is "Encouragement" vs "Praise"

For me this was a big aha moment when I realized I likely was a bit of a perfectionist because I love praise. We all do, but I was putting too much pressure on myself for it. Praise is a like candy. A little can be very satisfying. Too much can cause problems.

Most of the time as parents we naturally tell our children we are proud of them, โ€œYou got an A, Iโ€™m so proud of you,โ€! While this is natural try to encourage the deed not the doer. Encouragement would look like: โ€œCongratulations! You worked hard. You deserve it.โ€

It's a hard shift, but once you start encouraging it becomes a new way of communicating to your kids! It will allow your kids to look inward rather than to the opinions of others.

Meet me in stories today for some examples!

Letโ€™s celebrate the joys of motherhood today because being a mama is the best gift AND being surrounded by other supportive moms to lift me up(my mom, mother-in-law, friends, parenting support groups) has also been one of the greatest joys of my life.

Anyone that knows me well knows how much I love summer! So each day that gets me closer to that warm sunshine makes my heart happy. But, I also deeply love sleep so I have spent a lot of time researching options that help me enjoy the best of both worlds!

Enter the blackout shades! Some are more permanent while some are very travel-friendly. In today's post, I'll break down my favorite travel/temporary options and also what ages to use blackout shades (you don't want to use them from the start).
