Women in Engineering

Celebrating International Women’s Day last week, we want to highlight the talent of our Enabling Technologies team and the huge achievements being made by the strong women in digital health, imaging, navigation and robotics. These business leaders have worked relentlessly with their project teams and customers to evolve the way spine surgery is done and help to define the future of Stryker’s computer-assisted surgery portfolio.

We are proud to partner with Back to Healing (BTH) (formerly known as @StraightForward Foundation) as we celebrate their mission to improve the quality of life of individuals affected by #scoliosis. BTH strives to create empowerment and awareness campaigns that will deliver an impactful, creative and emotional platform focusing on the artistic beauty of how spinal curvatures uniquely affect the human body and #mentalhealth.

As research shows, the emotional side of scoliosis creates a very high burden on people living with the condition. BTH therefore truly believes in celebrating the remarkable stories of people afflicted to advance the understanding of the emotional implications, as well as create a society where those affected feel empowered and heard. They recently collaborated with Director Cara Scott on a breathtaking dance film where she magnificently captured 5 dancers whom all live and perform with scoliosis. Our Western New York team recently hosted a local lab in Rochester, New York where they were able to train two attendings, a new fellow, three ortho residents and a medical student in a safe, hands-on environment. The surgeons worked on thoracic, lumbar and pelvic fixation with Serrato. They also did percutaneous screws with Everest MI XT and interbody with Mojave. At Stryker, our engineers are best-in-class and among the most well trained in spine surgery concepts. Last month we started the first ever Spine Academy in our India office. Despite the current challenges we are facing in this new virtual world, 12 engineers graduated after more than 18 hours of virtual class room sessions lead by two spine surgeon faculty. Our mission is to make healthcare better – and we’re proud to continue that legacy by partnering with our customers to provide continuing education to our employees.
