The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services reports an invasive infection of Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) in a pediatric patient, who died due to their illness in September. This is a heartbreaking loss for the community and our thoughts are with the family.
The patient was not vaccinated with the Hib vaccine. Healthcare providers and public health staff identified this patient's contacts who were at risk of infection, and all were given antibiotic prophylaxis. Since 2012, there have been four other pediatric deaths due to invasive H. influenzae infections in Montana; three were caused by untypable strains of H. influenzae and one was caused by H. influenzae type a.
H. influenzae bacteria can cause many different types of infections. These infections range from mild, such as ear infections, to serious, such as bloodstream infections and meningitis. Maintaining healthy habits helps prevent H. influenzae disease, including washing hands often and not having close contact with people who are sick.
Vaccines can prevent the strain H. influenzae type b, and the best way to prevent Hib disease is to get vaccinated. CDC recommends Hib vaccines for all children younger than 5 years old.
We encourage parents and caregivers to take a moment to check that children—and everyone in the family—are current on recommended vaccines.
If you’re unsure whether your child is up to date, or you have questions about vaccines, please reach out to your healthcare provider or the Fergus County Health Department. We are here to help you understand what vaccines are recommended and when they are due. 406-535-7433
