Turning 65?

Your first window to sign up for Medicare is 7 months long.

3 months before your birthday month.

Your birthday month.

3 months after.

But those 7 months aren't equal.

Sign up in the 3 months before, and your coverage starts the first day of your birthday month.

Wait until your birthday month or after, and coverage starts the month after you sign up.

Already drawing Social Security? Parts A and B come to you automatically. Your card shows up about 3 months before your birthday.

Not on Social Security yet? Nothing is automatic. You have to sign up.

Someone called "from Medicare" and asked for my Medicare number. Is that real?

No.

Medicare won't call you out of the blue to ask for your number.

Calls like this show up every fall during open enrollment.

The caller ID can even look official. Scammers fake that.

So here's the rule.

Don't confirm your number. Don't confirm your birthday. Hang up.

Treat your red, white, and blue Medicare card like a credit card.

If you call the number on a Medicare mailer, who are you talking to?

Someone who works for that company.

They'll show you their plans.

They won't show you the company down the street.

That's their job.

Here's what I do instead.

I put several companies side by side with your doctors and prescriptions.

Then we let the numbers do the talking.

After you enroll, you don't call a 1-800 number.

You call our office. The claim, the new card, the question.

The one who signs you up is the one who answers next year.

It never costs you a penny. The insurance companies pay me to take care of you.
