When Congress made Medicare cover mammograms, screening rates went up and lives were saved. We have that same chance now with a blood test that can screen for Alzheimer’s early, but Medicare can’t cover it yet because of an outdated law.

For 36 years, Shirley Antwi-Barfi, Ph.D., worked in Chicago Public Schools and later served as a principal. Today, she is living with Alzheimer’s.

Her daughter, Adwoa, spoke with WGN TV about the family’s experience since Shirley’s diagnosis in 2020 and their participation in Walk to End Alzheimer's.

Adwoa said, “Hopefully we’re one of the last families that gets this diagnosis and other people don’t have to go through this.”
