October is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) awareness month. This month is to educate about the disorder, help promote inclusion, and to help others to resources that can be helpful. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurological disorder affecting attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Most diagnoses happen during childhood, but can even be diagnosed well into adulthood. Despite a lot of stigma, ADHD doesn’t make it impossible to thrive in academic or professional environments. This is why this month of October it is important to help spread awareness to reduce stigma, improve early identification, and encourage proper treatment.

In July we celebrate Ed Roberts, the activist who refused to accept that people with disabilities should be shut away. After being denied admission to college because administrators said he was "too disabled," he fought his way in, became a leader, and co-founded the Center for Independent Living. His vision that people with disabilities should control their own lives became the backbone of the independent living movement and helped pave the way for the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). His legacy lives on every time a ramp, a curb cut, or an accessible door makes the world a little more accessible.

Thirty-six years ago, on July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law. A landmark civil rights victory prohibiting discrimination based on disability in employment, public services, and daily life. Born from years of advocacy, including the powerful 1990 "Capitol Crawl" where activists ascended the Capitol steps to spotlight physical barriers, the ADA transformed public spaces and societal expectations nationwide.

Today, we celebrate that legacy and recommit to the principle that access, dignity, and equal opportunity belongs to everyone.
