πŸ’š Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Week πŸ’š

This week, we are shining a little extra green for the children and families living with mitochondrial disease.

Mitochondria are often called the β€œpowerhouses” of our cells because they help create the energy our bodies need. When they don’t work the way they should, it can affect many different parts of the body. Mitochondrial disease can also look very different from one person to another, which can sometimes make the road to answers a long one.

For families living this journey, awareness is about so much more than wearing green. It is about helping others understand the appointments, therapies, hospital stays, uncertainty, celebrations, milestones, and victories that are part of their everyday lives.

It is also about hope. Hope for more research. Hope for better treatments. Hope for earlier answers. Hope for a future where families feel seen, supported, and understood. πŸ’š

Throughout Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Week, we stand with every child and family affected by mitochondrial disease, including the families within our own Born Abel community.

We see your children. We celebrate their stories. We are cheering them on every step of the way.

A genetic counselor can be the first person to actually explain a mitochondrial disease diagnosis to a family. Urge Congress to pass the Access to Genetic Counselor Services Act so that guidance isn't limited by geography or insurance. Take action via the Mitochondrial Disease Advocacy Coalition: https://mitoadvocacy.org/wmdw/
