“Chiropractic has been a part of my life since childhood. I have fond memories of loading up with my 5 siblings in the family van to go get adjusted. If Dr. Mom couldn’t manage a health concern at home, she knew where to take us. At one point in time I suffered a particularly painful episode of chest pain, which my chiropractor was able to identify as an inflammatory condition and successfully resolve utilizing muscle testing and nutritional support. I had wanted to be a chiropractor from the age of 9, but that particular event fueled a broader desire to address not only musculoskeletal disorders, but also a wide range of health concerns from a proven and focused nutritional standpoint. I have been blessed with my beautiful wife, Martha, and seven children, whom I hope to keep healthy and happy with regular chiropractic and nutritional care. I consider it an honor to use not only my training, but my heart and hands as healing instruments to conservatively bring my patients to a better state of health.”

Could topical peppermint oil help with a tension-type headache? Research suggests it may provide relief comparable to acetaminophen—commonly known as Tylenol—for some people.

In one clinical trial, a 10% peppermint oil solution was applied to the forehead and temples and compared with acetaminophen for tension-type headaches. Participants using peppermint oil reported significant pain relief within 15 minutes, with results on par with the medication group. Those participants also reported no side effects from the peppermint oil treatment.

The active compound is menthol, which creates a cooling sensation on the skin and may help relax tight muscles around the head and neck. Because of this evidence, topical peppermint oil has been included in some clinical guidelines as a first-line option for tension headaches.

A few important details matter. Pure essential oils should be diluted in a carrier oil before applying them to the skin to help reduce the risk of irritation. The research specifically supports topical application; drinking peppermint tea or inhaling steam has not been studied as thoroughly for this purpose.

This evidence is specific to tension-type headaches, topical application, and a defined 10% concentration. It should not automatically be applied to other types of headaches.

Your gut plays an important role in immune function—and that may be especially meaningful during cold season.

A Cochrane meta-analysis found that people taking daily probiotics experienced fewer respiratory infections overall than those taking a placebo. They also became sick less often, and when they did get sick, their illnesses were nearly two days shorter on average.

People using probiotics also missed fewer days of school or work and were less likely to need antibiotics during the study period.

The researchers noted that the overall quality of evidence was rated low, in part because the individual studies differed from one another. So, while the findings are encouraging, there is still uncertainty about how consistently these effects may apply across different populations and probiotic strains.

The probiotic strains most commonly studied for immune support include Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and Bifidobacterium lactis, although the formulations varied across the trials. Probiotic-rich foods—including yogurt, kefir, and fermented vegetables—are also options to consider alongside supplements.

Onions and apples may offer more nutritional support for immune health than you might expect.

Both are among the richest dietary sources of quercetin, a flavonoid studied for its potential role in immune regulation. Research suggests quercetin may help stabilize mast cells—the cells that release histamine during an allergic response. In theory, less histamine release could support a calmer immune reaction to common triggers.

Quercetin also appears to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may contribute to broader immune support. Lab research has shown that it can suppress inflammatory signaling, although much of this work has been conducted in cell or animal models rather than large-scale human trials.

It is also worth remembering that the amount of quercetin the body absorbs from food can vary based on gut health and what else is eaten alongside it. Some researchers pair quercetin supplements with bromelain, an enzyme, to improve absorption. Still, whole foods such as apples and onions remain a straightforward way to include quercetin in your regular nutrition.

Chronic inflammation may be contributing to more discomfort than many people realize.

Joint pain, arthritis, and metabolic syndrome are all associated with chronic inflammation. Flavonoids—natural compounds found in fruits, vegetables, and tea—may help influence this process.

Quercetin, found in apples, onions, berries, and grapes, is one of the more studied flavonoids. Research suggests it may inhibit pro-inflammatory enzymes and reduce levels of C-reactive protein, a common marker of inflammation in the body. In some clinical settings, quercetin and similar compounds have been linked with measurable reductions in these markers.

The proposed mechanism is fairly straightforward: flavonoids may help reduce oxidative stress, which could prevent certain inflammatory pathways from becoming activated.

Much of the supporting research remains observational or comes from controlled clinical settings, so the evidence is not conclusive for any specific condition. Still, findings across multiple studies suggest a consistent relationship between flavonoid intake and lower inflammatory markers.

Could the foods you choose help support how well your brain ages?

Research suggests that flavonoids—the natural compounds found in dark berries, cocoa, and green tea—may cross the blood-brain barrier and help reduce inflammation in brain tissue. That matters because neuroinflammation and oxidative stress are considered important contributors to age-related cognitive decline.

Researchers are also exploring how certain flavonoids may support neurogenesis, or the formation of new neurons, and improve synaptic plasticity—the brain’s ability to strengthen connections between cells. Both processes are closely connected with learning and memory.

Observational studies have found that people with higher flavonoid intake tend to experience slower cognitive decline over time. Some early clinical trials using blueberry or high-flavonoid cocoa supplements have also shown measurable improvements in memory and executive function among older adults.

Still, most human trials in this area are small and early-stage, so firm conclusions cannot yet be drawn. The evidence is encouraging and points in a consistent direction, but nutrition is only one part of supporting long-term health.

Could the flexibility of your blood vessels influence your blood pressure more than you realize?

Blood vessels are more than passive tubes. They are designed to expand and contract in response to blood flow. This responsiveness is guided by the endothelium, a thin layer of cells lining the vessels. When the endothelium is not functioning well, blood vessels may become stiffer, and blood pressure tends to rise.

Flavan-3-ols—compounds found in foods and beverages such as cocoa, tea, and grapes—may support this process. A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials found that regular consumption of these compounds was associated with measurable reductions in blood pressure and improvements in endothelial function.

The changes were not dramatic. Researchers observed average reductions of only a few points. Still, small and consistent changes across a population may be meaningful when considering long-term cardiovascular risk.

It is also important to remember that whole foods such as cocoa and tea contain many other compounds, so these effects cannot be attributed to flavan-3-ols alone. Even so, controlled-trial evidence adds support to the association.

Your cells are constantly exposed to everyday stressors—often without any noticeable symptoms.

This process is known as oxidative stress. Free radicals are unstable molecules produced through normal metabolism and exposure to factors such as pollution and UV light. When they react with proteins, cell membranes, and DNA, they can cause damage. Over time, this accumulated damage is thought to play a role in aging and chronic disease.

A simple way to picture it is rust developing on metal. Without support, that damage can gradually weaken the structure from the inside out.

Flavonoids, naturally found in foods such as berries, tea, cocoa, and leafy greens, may help protect against this process. Research suggests they can neutralize reactive molecules through a process called free radical scavenging.

Studies have associated diets rich in flavonoid-containing foods with improved markers of oxidative stress, along with lower rates of diseases related to oxidative stress. Much of this evidence is observational, so it does not prove cause and effect. Still, the consistent association has drawn significant scientific interest.

Nourishing the body with a variety of whole foods is one practical way to support your overall health. If you have questions about nutrition and your health, contact Chi Rho Corrective Spinal in Little Rock.

Those vibrant colors in your fruits and vegetables offer more than visual appeal.

The pigments that make blueberries deep purple, oranges bright orange, and leafy greens richly green come largely from compounds called flavonoids. Research suggests these plant compounds may support more than a colorful plate.

A 2025 study published in Nature Food found that greater diversity of dietary flavonoid intake was associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality and major chronic diseases. This was an observational finding, so it does not prove that flavonoids caused those outcomes—but it is consistent with a broader body of research.

Different colored foods often contain different types of flavonoids. Berries and red grapes provide anthocyanins. Citrus fruits contain hesperidin and naringenin. Green tea and cocoa are rich in catechins. Each subclass appears to work through somewhat different biological pathways, which may help explain why variety matters.

Laboratory and population studies suggest these compounds may support cardiovascular function, help reduce oxidative stress, and play a role in neurological health. Researchers are still working to understand the specific mechanisms and ideal amounts.

A practical place to begin is simple: include a variety of naturally colorful fruits, vegetables, and other plant foods in your routine. Have questions about nutrition? Contact Chi Rho Corrective Spinal in Little Rock.

Neck pain is a common concern for people who spend much of the day at a desk. But can a consistent, structured exercise routine help reduce how often that discomfort appears?

A 12-week trial followed office workers who regularly experienced neck and shoulder discomfort, likely connected to extended screen time and static postures. Those who completed a neck-specific exercise program experienced fewer days of neck pain and less neck-related disability compared with where they started.

The researchers suggested that consistently strengthening the neck muscles may improve support for the cervical spine, potentially helping the neck better tolerate the physical demands of desk work over time.

It is important to note that this was a structured program—not casual stretching now and then. Participants followed a defined routine, which suggests that consistency played a meaningful role in the outcome.

Because the study focused specifically on office workers, the findings may be most relevant to that population. Still, for anyone spending long hours in front of a screen, this research offers a reasonable reminder to make neck-strengthening exercises a regular part of the week.

Save this post as a reminder to take your desk posture and movement habits seriously.

It’s easy to overlook neck training—but it may be worth giving it more attention.

The muscles of the neck help support the cervical spine. When they become weak or fatigued, the spine may take on more strain during everyday activities such as working at a desk, driving, or looking at a phone.

Research suggests that consistently training the neck for strength and endurance may reduce how often neck pain occurs and how severe it is when it does. In one 12-week study of office workers, regular neck exercise led to fewer days with neck pain and less neck-related disability overall.

The neck muscles can adapt fairly quickly, too. One 6-week program nearly doubled participants’ neck muscle endurance and produced measurable improvements in range of motion in multiple directions.

These exercises don’t require specialized equipment. Resistance bands, isometric holds, and controlled range-of-motion movements are commonly used in research. More than the specific tools, consistency over time appears to matter.
