We care about our communityโs health beyond just filling prescriptions. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we want to remind everyone that knowing your body is the first step in protecting your health.
Here is a simple guide on how to perform a breast self-exam, when to do it, and what to do next.
๐๏ธ WHEN should I do it?
The best time is about 3-5 days after your period ends when your breasts are least likely to be tender or swollen. If you no longer have periods, pick a specific day each month (like the 1st!) so it becomes a habit.
๐ช HOW to do a self-exam (Step-by-Step):
1. In the Shower: Use the flat parts of your three middle fingers to check the entire breast and armpit area. Use light, medium, and firm pressure to feel for any lumps, thickening, or hardened knots.
2. In Front of a Mirror: Look at your breasts with your arms at your sides, then raise them overhead. Look for any changes in size, shape, skin texture (dimpling), or ni**le changes.
3. Lying Down: Lie flat and place a pillow under your right shoulder. Put your right arm behind your head. Using your left hand, feel your right breast in a circular motion or up-and-down pattern. Repeat on the other side.
๐จ WHAT to do next:
If you notice a lump, skin changes, or ni**le dischargeโdonโt panic. Most lumps are not cancer, but you should always schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider right away for a professional evaluation.
Remember, self-exams are great for awareness, but regular mammograms are the gold standard for early detection. Talk to your doctor about when you should start scheduling them.
