Somebody taught you to be afraid of your own body.

Maybe it was a doctor who rushed you. A label that stuck. A birth story whispered like a warning. Your mother’s voice when she talked about her own body. However it came in, it came in quietly, and it has been making your decisions ever since.

I’m done watching women hand their bodies over to people who barely know their names. And I’m done watching the “natural” world do the same thing with a softer voice.

Many women hire a doula expecting her to speak up for them in labor.

Her training says she can’t.

She’s there for emotional and physical support, and she works under your provider and the hospital’s rules.

Your midwife and OB answer first to the state license they hold. A license comes with a board, protocols, and liability, and those come first.

So when a nurse walks in with a plan nobody discussed, the decision is still yours to make.
