Myth: rest is always the safest choice for a joint. Fact: joints are living tissue, and appropriate movement is generally part of how they stay functional over time. Research over the past two decades has shifted physical therapy practice away from rest-first approaches toward graded activity, since the right type and amount of loading tends to matter more than avoiding movement altogether. This series looks at some of the common assumptions people carry about joint health and where current research actually points. Education first, decisions second.

A few questions people ask about knee health. Stairs place more load through the joint per step than flat ground, which is why the difference is noticeable. Staying active generally supports joint health over time, and hip and calf strength are commonly linked to how load is managed at the knee. If movement patterns change or activity starts to feel limited, that's usually a good moment to have a conversation with someone. A friend asking on your behalf? Our team is always happy to help point them in the right direction.

You can have changes in the cartilage or meniscus and still have a knee that feels completely fine. In fact, research shows that around 24% of pain-free people have cartilage changes on MRI, while approximately 10% have meniscal tears.

No pain. No symptoms. Yet the scan may still show something.

That’s why an MRI finding shouldn’t automatically define how well your knee functions. What matters is how your knee moves, handles load, and performs in everyday life.

This is for anyone curious about how force plates work, we use tech to determine how athletes load their joints during athletic and functional activities, to help gauge strengths, and possible risk points. No fitness level or background is required, only curiosity. If any of this sounds familiar, a free discovery visit is a good next step.

The knee is the most common problem site in runners, built to manage a wide range of motion and load with every step. Research measuring joint force during walking estimates the knee carries roughly two to three times body weight per step, and considerably more on stairs. That's a lot of quiet engineering happening underneath ordinary movement, and a good reason to understand how it works before it needs attention.

Knees do a lot of quiet work. Biomechanics research estimates the joint carries several times body weight with each step, and studies on movement patterns consistently point to hip and calf strength as major factors in how that load is shared. Understanding the mechanics behind how a knee moves is a useful first step, whether the goal is staying active or simply understanding the body a little better. It's worth learning before making any changes to routine or training.

Nobody sets a goal of simply having a healthy knee.

The real goals are the Sunday long run, the finish line photo, the club session, the weekend hike, or saying yes to an adventure without hesitation. Those moments are what thoughtful training is really about, and they’re why strength work, sensible progression, and recovery all deserve a place in the plan.

Every runner, every goal, and every training history is different, which is why there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Understanding where to start is often the first step toward building a plan that matches individual goals and activity levels.

For anyone interested in discussing a running goal, upcoming event, or staying active over the long term, a free discovery visit offers an opportunity to ask questions and explore available options.

Knees are often compared to car tyres, as though every mile wears something away that can never be replaced. Living tissue doesn’t work quite that way.

Joints can adapt to the demands placed on them over time, which is one reason easy miles form the foundation of many well-balanced running programmes. They’re easier to scale, simple to fit around a busy schedule, and provide an opportunity to build consistency over the long term.

A walk break during a run still counts. So does taking the longer route home. Progress isn’t always measured by pace or distance, sometimes it’s about building a routine that supports the activities that matter most, whether that’s a favourite Sunday route or exploring a new place on foot.
