I used to work 60-hour weeks and also organize everyone’s appointments, errands and birthdays.

I kept putting my own needs last until I ended up in the hospital in a wheelchair and started wondering, how could I have gotten in so much pain that I could no longer walk?

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome was the worst thing that could have happened to me. It took away my life from one day to the next.

I knew I had to change some things and realized that I could take care of others without neglecting myself:

🫶 I learned how to say no and take space for myself while being a loving, caring friend and partner.
🫶 I learned that if I can’t do something, I might be able to help with smaller things.
🫶 I learned that my limits matter and I started honoring them.

Now, I’ve been pain-free for 8 years, taking my dog for walks and I’m back to exercising, gardening and cycling, not by ignoring my needs and aspirations but by showing up for myself.

I had to choose between eating like everyone else and eating for my health.

That decision wasn’t easy and it cost me more than just the foods I used to eat. Eating out became difficult, doing groceries became different and cooking became a new adventure.

The environment around us doesn’t make healthy eating easy, especially when you go out and so many options are junk food and processed food.

But I wanted my health back!

I was in constant burning pain from complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). I didn’t want five minutes of pleasure followed by two or three hours of feeling crappy and tired.

I wanted food that gave me energy, made me feel good and helped reduce inflammation. That’s why I started focusing on anti-inflammatory foods.

I didn’t change my diet over night but without these changes, I would not have healed from CRPS.

The first thing I experienced was that my food became more flavorful and then, my pain reduced until it was completely gone.

Complex regional pain syndrome was part of my life for 12 years.

Wheelchair, then crutches, then walking again. Even though I was walking, I still needed to be careful not to trigger the pain that was with me 24/7.

My foot was so sensitive that a bed sheet touching it was too much.

Getting dressed, making breakfast, doing groceries. Things I used to do without thinking became things I had to figure out.

Now, I’ve been pain-free for 8 years.

I can exercise as much and as often as I want.
I’m fully present with family and friends.
I do groceries without the burning pain in my foot.

CRPS was the wake-up call I needed to take care of myself.

It’s incredible that something so life-altering could ultimately have such a positive impact on the life I live today.

If you’re ready to heal from CRPS,

Pain had occupied so much of my life for so long that when it disappeared, there was suddenly this huge emptiness that came over me.

I had forgotten who I was without pain because it was part of my routines and awareness for 12 years. Even now, being pain-free for 8 years, I’m still afraid of the pain coming back and I do not know if that fear will ever go away.

But while that fear may still be there, I’m not the same person I was before.

What changed?

Through chronic pain, I learned that the life I’d been living wasn’t the life I’d imagined or longed for.

I freed myself from the chains that were put around me by my mom and my granny:

I became a nutrition and health coach and personal trainer.
I quit my office job and began to help others change their lives too.
I turned my experience with chronic pain into my life’s work.

I had run away from fears, challenges and obstacles for far too long and chronic pain guided me in facing what I had been trying to escape.

Maybe that was the greatest gift chronic pain ever gave me:

It forced me to meet myself.
