One of the spine structures people rarely hear about.

The ligamentum flavum is an elastic ligament inside the spine that helps connect nearby vertebrae and support movement.

Over time, it can thicken, especially with degenerative change, and may contribute to narrowing around nearby nerves.

Why would someone get a lumbar facet joint injection?

The facet joints are small joints along the back of the spine that help provide stability and guide movement. Over time, arthritis, degenerative changes, or injury can make these joints painful.

Facet-related pain is often felt primarily in the lower back and may extend into the buttocks or upper thighs. It can sometimes become more noticeable with movements such as leaning backward, twisting, or prolonged standing.

A lumbar facet joint injection places medication into or around the suspected painful joint. Depending on the injection, it may serve two purposes: helping determine whether the facet joint is contributing to the pain and providing temporary relief by reducing inflammation and irritation.

Unlike an epidural injection, which targets inflammation around spinal nerves, a facet injection targets the joint itself.

Facet joint pain is not diagnosed by the scan alone.

MRI can show arthritis or degenerative changes in the facet joints, but those findings do not always match where pain is actually coming from.

That is why symptoms, physical exam findings, and sometimes diagnostic injections are used together to determine whether a facet joint is truly the pain source.

A 60-day peripheral nerve stimulation treatment significantly reduced chronic low back pain compared with usual interventional care.

In this multicenter randomized controlled trial, 230 patients with chronic low back pain were assigned to either percutaneous 60-day peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) or physician-directed usual care with standard interventional treatment.

PNS works by temporarily placing small leads near the lumbar medial branch nerves to deliver mild electrical stimulation.

At 3 months, 55% of patients receiving PNS achieved at least 50% pain relief, compared with 26% of patients receiving usual interventional care. PubMed
Patients receiving PNS also showed greater improvements in disability, with 53% achieving at least a 50% improvement in disability scores at 3 months. Improvements in pain and function were sustained through 6 months.

The findings support 60-day peripheral nerve stimulation as an effective treatment option for chronic low back pain.

📌 Educational only. Speak with a qualified physician to determine whether peripheral nerve stimulation is appropriate for your diagnosis and symptoms.

Low-speed car accidents can still leave you sore, stiff, or uncomfortable afterward, even when the vehicle damage looks minor.

Possible symptoms after a low-speed collision may include:

✔️ Neck pain or stiffness
✔️ Upper- or lower-back pain
✔️ Shoulder soreness
✔️ Headaches
✔️ Muscle or soft-tissue strain

Symptoms may appear right away or become more noticeable over the following hours or days.

If pain persists, worsens, or comes with numbness, weakness, or radiating symptoms, a medical evaluation can help determine what may be involved.

💉 When pain continues after the initial injury, interventional pain management may offer targeted, non-surgical treatment options depending on the source.

Did your pain start immediately after a car accident, or show up later?
