New week, new Sessions ✨
Today is also Indigenous Peoples' Day, and we'd be remiss not to take a moment to acknowledge the traditions that helped inspire the way we gather at Totem.
For generations, many Indigenous communities have used talking circles to share stories, pass down wisdom, navigate conflict, and care for one another.
In many talking circles, a talking piece is passed from person to person. Whoever holds it has the floor, while everyone else listens without interruption.
Sound familiar?
When we began building Totem, we drew inspiration from these traditions. But somewhere along the way, we realized that introducing technology and bringing together people separated by cities, states, and even oceans meant we were creating something both different and familiar.
We weren't sitting together in a physical circle, but we were still making room for one another. So we chose to call them Spaces.
Indigenous peoples hold generations of invaluable wisdom, even as their communities have been marginalized and their traditions exploited. We believe honoring that wisdom means acknowledging where our inspiration comes from, respecting what isn't ours to claim, and refusing to make connection a privilege reserved for those who can afford it. That's one of the reasons our Spaces are free.
"I believe much trouble and blood would be saved if we opened our hearts more."
