Dr.Andrew Hung is corresponding author on a study published in npj Digital Medicine titled “End to End AI System for Surgical Gesture Sequence Recognition and Clinical Outcome Prediction. The paper describes Frame-to-Outcome (F2O), an AI-based system capable of analyzing videos from the nerve-sparing portion of robot-assisted prostate cancer surgery.

F2O could analyze surgeons’ techniques and it was able to match expert human reviewers in predicting patient outcomes. This innovative system can greatly reduce the time spent analyzing surgical performance and potentially provide objective feedback on techniques associated with successful patient recovery.

"Remarkable milestones achieved this year alone demonstrate what is possible through sustained federal investment in cancer research," writes NCI Director Dr. Anthony Letai in NCI's FY28 Professional Judgment Budget Proposal.

"Recent results showing that the drug daraxonrasib extends survival for people with pancreatic cancer have demonstrated that the once 'undruggable' RAS family of genes can, in fact, be targeted—bringing new hope against one of the most deadly cancers."
