I’ve just completed 6 weeks with these ladies and they have practiced the: Kettlebell clean, squat, reverse lunge, lateral lunge, halos, swing, stagger stance swing, single leg deadlift, split squat, overhead press, push-press, and lots of mobility exercises which aren’t pictured.

The kettlebell strength class is such a fun class. We are meeting once a week on Wed at 9am and I’d love to add more class times in the new year.

You all crushed it!!!!!

Back in my training (25 years ago!) I learned two different ways to do Short Spine. I believe one is Romana and the other is Carola but I’m not 100% on this. Does anyone know?

The first way (which I primarily taught in my apprenticeship) goes like this: at the very top, with the carriage closed, you bend your knees to your shoulders (not wider than the shoulder blocks). At the same time you bring the soles of the feet together. It’s an everted and dorsi-flexed foot (for biomechanics nerds). Then, the spine rolls down while the feet stay stable. In essence, you’re stretching your hamstrings, moving your tail away from your feet. Then, you keep the “diamond shape” in your legs, arc them back over to 45 degrees and finally extend the knees. n

In the second way, which most people do, the legs bend to the shoulder blocks (same as before) but the feet are in a pilates V. Then the feet stay close to the bum as the spine rolls down. This way stretches the back more.

In the first version you will get more of a hamstring stretch and the second version a little more “massage” on the back.

Use pilates as a r to get what you need for your body. Need more stretch in your hammies? There’s a way. Need to roll through your back? There’s a way. Both are right.

It’s October and our Move of the Month is: Short Spine! We are also including Overhead and Jackknife into the practice. All three of these moves transfer weight from the tail to the upper back. It’s a whole body event to transfer that weight 😆 but once you do it feels really good on the back. Short spine is also referred to as “Short Spine Massage.” I think Pilates is probably the only exercise modality to include “massage” into the routine.

Here is an archival clip of Joseph Pilates teaching Overhead and Short Spine. In the classical series Short Spine comes after the 100s. The feet straps give a little support for the lower body to lift up. In the advanced classical series, it is replaced by Overhead - no more feet straps here and instead you have to use your upper body for lift off - press those arms down.

So if you’re looking for a massage today, head on into the pilates studio. We will be doing Short Spine Massage in every class this month. 🥰

As your body and your life change, your fitness needs will change too. You don’t have to do everything, all the time. There will be seasons when Pilates is your main focus and others when you’re lifting, playing tennis, walking, running, or simply doing whatever fits into your life. The goal is to keep adapting so movement continues to support what you need at every age.

We’ve been talking about AI influencers and the increasingly unreal people we’re being asked to admire. But why invent inspiration when the real thing is so much better?

Here are a few very real, very inspiring people defying the laws of aging (and gravity)!

Our September Move of the Month is - Pulling Straps. Each class we are working with exercise to iron it out to perfection (or whatever that might look like for our body 😜).

In the classical order, pulling straps comes before T-pull but I actually learned it the other way. Starting with T-pull keeps your back neutral and gives you the feeling of reaching N,S,E,W. Then, as you progress to pulling straps, you’re adding complexity by moving your spine with your arms (and a nice breath please!). This series comes at the perfect time, typically after lying supine. Then you can turn around move into teaser just after.

If we follow the classical order (and this differs based on 1) beginner/ intermediate/ advanced and 2) What you consider “classical.”

In a pilates session you will move from working the anterior chain, to the posterior chain, to the lateral and medial chains, walking out of the studio with a balanced body.
