Today we revisit published 2016 & 2020 research findings that state drinking coffee is associated with a lower risk of developing colorectal cancer and improved survival rates for patients with the disease.

According to Key Findings from 2016 Research
• Lower Risk of Onset: Moderate-to-high coffee intake (1 to 4+ cups per day) is linked to a reduced risk of colorectal and colon cancer. A published April 2016 study from the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center found that drinking 1 to 2 servings daily reduced odds by 26%, with higher reductions (up to 50%) at higher intakes.
• Improved Survival in Patients: For individuals already diagnosed with advanced or metastatic colorectal cancer, higher coffee consumption is tied to longer progression-free survival and overall survival. Drinking 4 or more cups a day has shown significant hazard reductions in clinical studies published via JAMA Oncology September 17, 2020 Vol. 6 No. 11
• Caffeine May Not Be the Only Factor: Both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee show protective or beneficial associations, indicating that other compounds play a major role - per both the Keck USC and JAMA publications.

Potential Biological Mechanisms
• Melanoidins: Formed during the roasting process, these compounds can stimulate colon mobility and reduce the time harmful substances sit in the gut.
• Antioxidants and Diterpenes: Bioactive components like polyphenols, kahweol, and cafestol have anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative, and antioxidant properties that help fight cellular damage and interfere with tumor blood supply (angiogenesis).
• Insulin Sensitivity: Coffee consumption helps improve metabolic health and insulin sensitivity, which are linked to lower cancer proliferation rates.

On this we are thrilled to share the following news regarding our WunderGlo Director, Dr. Heinz-Josef Lenz.

Dr. Lenz has been working on some groundbreaking research that sheds new light on "dark DNA," the non-coding regions of our genome once dismissed as filler, now revealed as powerful regulators of cancer biology.

This new review explores how long non-coding RNA's (incRNAs) shape the colorectal cancer microenvironment, influencing immune cells, blood vessel formation and the tumor's surrounding tissue.

This research could pave the way for better ways to detect and treat the disease.

This new publication, that gives acknowledgement to research funded by The Gloria Borges WunderGlo Foundation, is one of the first in the World to describe this for colorectal cancer!!

Dr. Lenz is a caring, generous and brilliant clinician and oncologist who WunderGlo is beyond proud to have on our Team! We thank him for his dedication to research and WunderGlo's Mission as co-founder of The Wunder Project to move colorectal cancer treatment discoveries forward ultimately to "the cure". As USC/Keck's aims to Make Cancer a Disease of the Past, together with WunderGlo we fight on and say: "Cancer Your Time is Up"!
