Sharing this week’s WunderGlo Medical Monday

This The WunderGlo Foundation will share a study which discusses existing research on the effectiveness of various CRC screening methods.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) has become the most common cause of cancer-related deaths among men and the second most common among women under the age of 50. Only a small minority of CRC follows a hereditary pathway; most CRCs arise from adenomas through the so-called “adenoma-carcinoma sequence”, and the majority of adenomas present as polyps that progress from small to large, and then to dysplasia and cancer.

Screening for CRC enables the detection of neoplastic lesions at an early stage and also precancerous lesions, such as adenomas or sessile serrated lesions; this feature differentiates this screening program from others, such as prostate and breast cancers, which are only able to identify cancers at an early stage. Currently, about 60–70% of CRCs are diagnosed at an advanced stage. If the healthy population was regularly submitted to annual screening, the death rate could be reduced to 60%, and 5-year survival increased to 73% (currently 65%).

ACS 2018, USPSTF 2021, and ACG 2021 guidelines recommend screening for colorectal cancer from the age of 45 years for individuals with average risk; however, ACP 2023 guidelines recommend screening at the age of 50 years for individuals with average risk.

In recent years, mortality rates of CRC in Western countries have been on a steady decline, which is largely attributed to widespread screening programs and advancements in treatment modalities. Indeed, early detection through screening significantly improves prognosis, with stark differences in survival rates between localized and metastatic disease. This article aims to provide a comprehensive review of the existing literature, delving into the performance and efficacy of various CRC screening strategies. It navigates through available screening tools, evaluating their efficacy and cost-effectiveness. The discussion extends to delineating target populations for screening, emphasizing the importance of tailored approaches for individuals at heightened risk.

On this of Father's Day weekend, The WunderGlo Foundation honors all of the "Dads" out there who touch your children's hearts as only you can.

WunderGlo wishes you all a very Happy Father's Day. Your children, spouses, and families deeply love & appreciate you, their strong and steadfast "heroes" who are always there to hold their hands.

The following is an excerpt from our Founder's blog-post written on Father's Day 2011 - a "thank you & love letter" written to her daddy, Michael Keller entitled: "Happy Father's Day":

"The story I want to tell you is about the days following my time in the ICU, when the hours between midnight and 8am were the toughest for me and my sleep was fitful. My back and ribs were incredibly sore from the procedure and I became more sore as the night wore on. My pain meds were quite helpful, but they couldn't really un-spasm the spasms that cropped up on both sides of my back. My mom was the best at kneading those out of my back, but given the fact that she never left my hospital room during my two weeks in the hospital and was awake during most of those two weeks, someone needed to relieve her and make her feel that I was in the best hands possible so she could get some shut-eye every now and then."

"That person was my dad."

"He would stay up all night with me, between the hours of midnight and 7am, rubbing my shoulders, arms, and hands, playing soothing music for me (the Vitamin String Quartet's rendition of Radiohead's Kid A, the soundtrack to my favorite movie (Shadowlands), and Fleetwood Mac were some favorites), and guiding me through meditations that relaxed me, took my mind away from my physical body, and gently guided me to sleep. He told me about sandy beaches and crashing waves and about beautiful mountaintops and fresh alpine air. And when I finally fell asleep for that hour or so, he held my hand the whole time. Just feeling my dad's big, warm hand enveloping mine made me feel relaxed, safe, and, thankfully, sleepy. I don't know what I would have done without my dad during those weeks at Washington Hospital Center, because it was precisely that rest I gave my body that comprised the bedrock of my unyieldingly fast and complication-free recovery."

"So on this Father's Day, I honor my dad for everything he's done for me -- from teaching me how to swim when I was a little one, to making the most delicious vegan snacks for me (his guacamole is to die for), to always giving me world-class back/hand/foot rubs no matter what time of day it is (especially during my Benadryl-induced chemo naps and after crazy workouts)."

"And for heroically holding my hand when I need him to." -Gloria Borges -AKA: "WunderGlo" on June 19, 2011
