Elizabeth met Alex on a fluke through an app. She meets many through apps, Zeel, Lyft and Uber. Life stories are amazing, and often times incredibly inspiring. Having newly stopped drinking, it seemed the Universe/ God just dropped new sober ...

Happy Mother’s Day!

As I mentioned, I was birthed a mother 21 years ago last week. It is crazy how time flies!

You would think it gets easier as they get older but alas, I have decided it is much easier to apply band-aids to skinned knees than ride the roller coaster of life, emotions and anything else that comes along with teens and the early twenties!

Happy day to anyone who is walking alongside as a guide to a child.

May the force be with you forever and always!

Loving Yourself Will Make It Better …

Are you feeling powerless? Have circumstances taken a turn you don’t like? Do you feel there’s nothing you can do to make today better? One power that’s always available to you is the power to love yourself.

Sometimes we feel powerless. We have circumstances in our lives we simply cannot change, no matter what we do to create something different, to move the situation along. We can’t get another person to behave differently. We can’t seem to change something at work. We can’t do much about our money situation, at least not at the moment. Nothing in life seems to be going out way. It’s not that we’re doing anything wrong. We aren’t off our path or neglecting a particular lesson. The energy of that particular time in our lives is frustrating. There is no action we can take to change our circumstances. All we can do is surrender to the circumstances, accept what’s happening, and stay in the moment.

During those times, there is one action we can take that will help. We can love ourselves . When we can’t do anything about the world around us, when we can’t even seem to do much about ourselves, we can always, always love ourselves. When all our other powers seem stripped away, we can practice the power of self-love. It’s one power no one can take away.

Pictured are the sacred marks from carrying my son. These marks that I have battled with emotionally and mentally tell the story of this time when at the young age of 23, I got pregnant. My inner body critic likes to point them out and look at them through a negative lens … my inner wise woman reminds me of the beauty of pregnancy and childbirth, the gift I was given when my son chose to birth me a mother 21 years ago today.

We need to love our imperfections, the sacred stories we have written across our bodies. We need to embrace the natural beauty of our lives.

I may regret eating too many ice cream cones when I was pregnant, but becoming a mother completely changed my life and I am so grateful for the experience up to now. I am grateful for my body’s ability to carry, nourish and birth a baby. I am grateful for the journey and the lessons I have learned along the way.

I can’t believe Noah has reached adulthood and is graduating from college. It really so crazy how fast it happened!

Happy Birthday Noah!

It’s Derby week y’all …

It is easy to get hung up on the things we do wrong in our life.

When I reflect on my years as a parent up until now, I can see my shortcomings, and decisions I made that in hindsight I would have made different, discipline techniques I might have implemented, vacations I wish I took, skills I wish I had passed down, etc. but alas they are just about grown and I don’t get a do-over.

In reflecting on those choices that I wish I could change, I also must look at and consider the aspects of parenting where I really showed up as the best mom I could be.

A decision I made that I would never change is the decision to homeschool my kids … the freedom to wake up to their animated, joyous smiling faces that welcomed the world each and every morning , to sleep in and create life the way we wanted it to look, the extra outside time most kids don’t enjoy when attending school in a building, the opportunity to experience life in a much more hands-on, experiential way, arts and crafts; fresh, homemade food, running errands, walking to the hardware store, getting to know our neighbors, and our yearly field trip to the track to watch the horses workout … I wish I had never quit homeschooling, that is most definitely a decision I would change if I could go back in time.

This week in particular though, reminds me of all the good times the kids and I had at home, all the fun we shared and the unique experiences they got to have simply because they were schooled at home.

This one reminds me of growth and expansion. It is as if my spine is bursting from the soil the a tree would … reaching for the sun.

I believe we are here to grow, evolve and transform. I believe we are souls that have chosen a human experience, exactly the body, personality, parents, siblings, friends, family, and human experiences we need in this lifetime for our soul to expand, learn, evolve and grow.

Thank you for yet another beautiful depiction of the curvature of my spine.

When was the last time you felt truly free?

Adulting is hard. The ups, the downs, responsibilities … household, bills to pay, kids to raise, relationships family, friends, maybe a significant other … baggage from the past (maybe you are luck with just a backpack, more often it seems to be a suitcase or two).

We all have that inner child, the aspect of us, that original part of us who entered into this world with the capacity to experience wonder, joy, innocence, sensitivity, and playfulness.

Often times she gets buried, tucked away, is forced to grow up too soon, experiences a rupture that creates hurt and disappointment. We all have a younger part of ourselves that was “never quite loved the right way or the way they needed as a child, “ clinical psychologist Trish Phillips, Psy.d says.

We carry this being with us on a daily basis and she (he) usually shows up during times of hurt more often than not … in our relationships, during certain experiences that trigger feelings we may have once experienced by a caregiver when we were small.

The beauty is we can go back and heal our little child through inner work and addressing our needs that weren’t met when we were children. We can find that playful, joyful, free-spirited essence again through inner child healing work.

This can be done a variety of ways. One way to begin is by framing a picture of yourself when you were a youngster.
Place it somewhere you can see it. If you could imagine being your little child’s caregiver … how would you treat her (him)? How would you show up? You could practice simply visualizing just that with your little person.

Today marks six months without a drink …

I definitely enjoyed my alcoholic beverages as an early adult. I have mostly been a beer drinker, the rest just made me sick. Occasionally I would enjoy a glass of wine.

But beer … I loved beer! My romance with beer began with Newcastle Brown Ale, then Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Magic Hat #9. I enjoyed a good porter and a stout in the colder, darker months. I leaned towards the Corona and Negra Modelo in the summer months. By far, Negra Modena became my favorite, best when garnished with a lime. I love the way beer tastes, the at it hits the tongue. I used to wish it didn’t make me drunk. I didn’t drink it for the effects … I absolutely loved the taste!

As I grew older however, our relationship began to dwindle. Beer began to keep me up at night with ruminating thoughts and sleeplessness. It became something I was no longer enjoying. The weekend beers just weren’t that enjoyable when followed by insomnia, anxiety and a next day sluggishness.

I then thought I found the perfect way to drink for me… occasionally, right around 5 pm and no more than 2. This likely is still the perfect amount which doesn’t seem to interfere with my life.

The last several years I could probably count the number of drinks per year on both hands. On October 24, the day after a wedding (and I only enjoyed two beers), I decided I was going to give it up for a year. Today marks halfway! I have no idea if giving up alcohol is a forever thing or a now thing. I do feel better, have more clarity, less digestive stressors due to the gluten and likely genetically modified grains so often used in beer.

Alcohol … the dance with alcohol is an interesting one to say the least. First many drink to have a good time, then to celebrate, then to unwind from a stressful day, or when one is feeling down. The next thing you know, there is always a reason for a drink.

The relationship we have with alcohol is personal and as with any relationship, I think it is important to explore the why, what, when, where, how and with who … a little self-inquiry to better understand its function in your life. Cheers!

Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine. I was diagnosed around puberty and at the age of 12 had a spinal fusion in the spring, 33 years ago. It is to believe, and crazy how fast time flies!

I celebrated 45 years old a couple Saturdays ago. My oldest will be 21 and graduate from college and my youngest will turn 18 in November!

I share this with you as despite it may or may not being that disruptive to my life, it has altered my path and choices I have made along the way. It is no surprise when I think about it … my path has been anything but the straight and narrow, or what many in the mainstream would call conventional.

My back, a dysfunctional upbringing, trauma and fear of abandonment in my adolescent years, the inability to control sodimany things in my life, disordered eating, over exercise, body dysmorphia have made it hard to find self love or feel “enough”.

I share this as I know I am not alone. Many, likely most of us are walking around with the feelings of inadequacy in some way or another, not being enough or feeling as though we are truly lovable. BUT we are ALL lovable as our perfectly ,
imperfect, perfect human selves.

During 2020, I started writing a book and this past year decided to add the final touches after being inspired by during an interview when I hosted the Thrive With Lyme online summit. I am excited to share these daily practices and rituals in self-love with you! In a matter of days, my first book will be available on Amazon!

I commissioned my dear friend to create my book cover and she did four pieces that I think she captured perfectly, based on an X-ray of my spine. Stay tuned to see each one as they are each one-of-kind.

I am so grateful for so many people on my journey, but these two in particular ladies for helping me make this upcoming book a reality!
