It's Indigenous Milk Medicine Week, coordinated by Indigenous Milk Medicine Collective!

Why is this week important?

Breastfeeding is an important social driver of health. These are conditions in which you’re born and grow, work, live and age that affect your health throughout your life.

Native families are at higher risk for serious health issues, including being severely overweight and developing diabetes. Breastfeeding has been found to lower the risk of developing these medical conditions.

A recent study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that Native American babies are breastfed at lower rates than other babies in the United States.

While 84.1% of all babies in the USA are breastfed at some point in their lives, only 78.4% of Native Americans (including American Indians, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians) are ever breastfed.

This health disparity is because of a lack of Native American lactation consultants and past cultural issues in Native communities that disrupted family bonds.

At Bonnie Knows Breast we're finishing off World Breastfeeding Week with a BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!!

We are partnering with The Milk Bank to be a Milk Depot and Milk Express access point!

What does this mean?

Milk Depots are convenient donation sites for The Milk Bank’s approved Milk Donors to bring frozen breast milk donations. Milk Depots safely collect & store milk before sending it to The Milk Bank for processing.

Milk Express access points provide quick access to orders of Pasteurized Donor Human Milk for families at home. Milk Express helps bridge a gap in breastfeeding (illness, absence, between delivery & a successful breastfeeding routine).

Stay tuned for more details!

If you're interested in starting the process to become an approved donor, visit www.themilkbank.org/donate-milk/

If you need access to milk, visit https://www.themilkbank.org/request-milk-families/

There are still two more days left of World Breastfeeding Week!
This year's theme is Closing the Gap: Breastfeeding Support For All!

Parents everywhere need paid maternity leave!

At a minimum, every birthing parent should receive at least 18 weeks, preferably 6 months, of PAID maternity leave!

They should also receive paid time off for breastfeeding or expressing milk upon returning to work.

Maternity protections improve parent and children's health and well-being after birth, and are critical for breastfeeding.

It's World Breastfeeding Week!
This year's theme is Closing the Gap: Breastfeeding Support For All!

Did you know that maternity leave increases breastfeeding? Yet more than half a billion worldwide lack adequate maternity protections. To increase opportunities to breastfeed and improve health and well-being of parents and babies, societies need to ensure ALL parents have access to sufficient maternity protections.
