She came to me after 18 months of not being able to sleep the night before a presentation.
She had tried everything she could find. Sleep hygiene protocols. Melatonin. A therapist who suggested journaling before bed. Taking Fridays off so she could reset before Monday morning.
Nothing held. Every Sunday night, without fail, she was awake at 2 AM running through every possible way the week could go wrong.
In our second session, something surfaced. Her first corporate job at 24. A manager who called out her work publicly in a team meeting -- in front of everyone -- as an example of what not to do.
She had never connected that memory to what was happening now. Why would she? One was from fifteen years ago. One was happening every week.
But her nervous system had learned something that day: being seen and falling short is dangerous. And for fifteen years, it had been preparing for that threat before every high-stakes moment.
Once that response was addressed at the subconscious level, the preparation stopped being necessary.
She texted me the morning after her board presentation. "I slept seven hours. For the first time in I don't know how long, I was actually in the room."
The pattern that keeps you stuck is rarely where you think it is.
