“But did you die?… NO!” 😂
Sometimes an ankle needs a little more than “ice it and see how it feels.”
Dry needling can be one tool we use when treating an irritated or swollen ankle, especially when the surrounding muscles are tight, painful, or not functioning normally.
So how could sticking a bunch of little needles around an ankle possibly HELP?
Dry needling creates a local physiologic response in the tissues. Research shows needling can influence pain related neurophysiology, inflammatory signaling, local blood flow, and neuromuscular function.
In practical terms, that can help us:
• DECREASE pain and protective muscle guarding
• IMPROVE mobility so the ankle can move normally again
• IMPROVE activation and function of the muscles that help stabilize the ankle
• IMPROVE the local tissue environment and circulation
• HELP address swelling as part of the overall recovery process
Dry needling is not a magic needle that simply “drains swelling.” It is doing much more than just helping with ankle edema. By addressing pain, muscle tone, movement, circulation, and neuromuscular function, it can be a valuable part of getting that ankle moving and functioning normally again.
And yes, sometimes that means making your ankle look like a porcupine for a few minutes. 😂
The goal isn’t just to make it hurt less.
The goal is to RESTORE motion, IMPROVE function, CONTROL swelling, and get the patient back to doing what they need to do.
