October is National Physical Therapy Month, and this one means a lot to me. Before becoming a Recreational Therapist, I spent more than 16 years working as a Physical Therapist Assistant.
PT taught me so much about the human body: movement, strength, balance, mobility, pain, function, and the incredible ways our bodies adapt and recover.
But working in healthcare also taught me something else: no single discipline can address the whole person.
Physical Therapy might help someone regain the strength and balance to walk on uneven terrain.
Occupational Therapy might help them build the skills or adaptations to manage daily tasks independently.
Mental health professionals might help address the fear, anxiety, grief, or change in identity that came with an injury or diagnosis.
And Recreational Therapy might help adapt the favorite activities that make a person feel whole again.
Different disciplines. Different expertise. One person. One life.
That's why interdisciplinary care matters. We don't have to stay in our own lanes without ever crossing paths. We can understand each other's scopes, respect each other's expertise, and recognize when another discipline has something valuable to bring to the table.
My PT background still shapes the Recreational Therapist I am today. I don't see these as separate chapters of my career. They're different pieces of the same bigger picture.
Sometimes PT helps someone get back on their feet. And RT gets to ask, "What do you want to do, and how can we make that possible?"
This National Physical Therapy Month, I'm celebrating the PTs and PTAs doing incredible work, including the team at Dirigo Physical Therapy & Performance and the interdisciplinary teams who know we're at our best when we work together. 💚
