One of the hardest parts of having a practice is accepting that it will not always look the way you want it to.

There will be seasons when you are practicing regularly and it feels like part of the rhythm of your life. And then life changes. Work gets busy. You travel. Your kids need you. You get sick or injured. You miss a few days, which turns into a few weeks, and suddenly coming back can feel much harder than you ever expected.

I have watched this happen with students for years, and I think one of the biggest mistakes we make is believing that because we fell out of the routine, we somehow failed at the practice.

You didn’t.

A lifelong practice has ebbs and flows because a lifelong life has ebbs and flows.

The important thing is that you come back. Maybe not to exactly the practic

Ujjayi pranayama is such a beautiful practice for learning how to work with the breath in a more deliberate way.

What I love about pranayama is that it gives you something very tangible to focus on. You are paying attention to the length of the inhale, the retention, the exhale, your posture, and the subtle shifts that happen in the body while you breathe.

In this variation, we work with a simple 1:1:1 ratio. Five counts to inhale, five to retain, and five to exhale. It sounds simple, but practices like this can teach you so much about breath control, concentration, steadiness, and your relationship to the pause between breaths.

Like anything in yoga, it becomes more refined with practice. The goal is not to force the breath, but to make it smoother, steadier, and more conscious over time.

Working through the twists, folds, and transitions that make up the practice.

Some postures come more naturally than others. Some take strength, some take mobility, and some take a lot of repetition before they start to make sense.

There’s no rush to get anywhere. You keep practicing, learning how your body works, and coming back to the things that challenge you. Over time, your relationship with a posture can change completely.

That’s one of the reasons we keep showing up. 🧘♀️

Kind words from one of our Body Mechanics students

Mary has been practicing with Krista and shared this about her experience with Body Mechanics.

One of the things we love about this class is that it’s not just about doing an exercise. Krista explains why you’re doing it, what muscles are working, and how everything in the body works together.

That understanding can carry with you long after class is over.

Thank you, Mary, for sharing your experience with us! 🤍

Robin working on Marichyasana B 🧘♀️

Robin is one of our teachers here at The Yoga Shala, but she’s also always a student of the practice. This is part of what makes yoga so interesting—there is always something to work on, learn from, and come back to.

Your practice doesn’t have to look perfect. It’s about showing up, paying attention, and giving yourself time to learn.

We love getting to practice alongside our teachers and learn from each other 🤍

Strength isn’t just about how much you can lift. It’s also about how well you move.

Body Mechanics combines calisthenics, functional movement, mat Pilates, yoga, and rehabilitation principles to help build strength, mobility, balance, and coordination.

The work is slow and precise, giving you time to really pay attention to how your body moves. We work on building usable strength, improving coordination and body awareness, and helping you move with more confidence.

Whether you’re an athlete, sit at a desk all day, are recovering from an injury, or just want to better understand your body, this class is for you.

Body Mechanics with Lisa:
