As it turned out, I went into active labor on the afternoon of my midwife’s family engagement. We had prepared for a variety of outcomes, and she was by the phone if we needed anything.
I nursed Summer into a nap in the rocking chair through contractions. Things progressed quickly after she woke up. We scrambled to get her out on a walk with my mom, and Nick tied up a few loose ends with work and closed his laptop.
He prepared me a labor coconut to sip on (a family tradition) and we ran the bathtub.
He was really the only person I wanted or needed there. Miranda | Maternity & Birth Photographer so kindly supported from the hallway to document, respecting our space so fully that it felt like she wasn’t even there.
This birth was more crampy and sharp in sensation, perhaps because my water broke before. I squeezed Nick’s hand and pulled on the bath bars for support while he dug into my upper back and shoulders.
It’s such a mental challenge not to fight the process, and I kind of enjoy that part of it, the way I can reach an edge and let go a little deeper with each wave. The water really helps me release the excess muscle tension that can get in the way of opening.
I thought I got away clean this time, but of course, as I was nearing pushing, my body purged to make space.
We drained the tub, and she swiftly emerged into our hands over the empty tub.
She was face down and made a spiral rotation, free of any cord tangles, and made her sweet little voice known right away.
I brought her to my chest. Nick and I shared that joyful moment of simply taking her in and falling in love with her.
Then I saw that she was our girl. 😍👼
