🎗️ CAN GLP-1 MEDICATIONS DO MORE THAN HELP WITH WEIGHT LOSS?

Emerging research presented at the 2026 ASCO Annual Meeting is exploring a potential connection between GLP-1 medications and lower breast cancer risk. Here’s what researchers found! 👇

🔬 Promising findings include:

✨ 12% lower relative risk of certain hormone receptor-positive breast cancers in women under 50.

✨ 7% lower relative risk of the same breast cancer subtype in women 50 and older.

✨ 16% lower relative risk of breast cancer in women with obesity who were considered high-risk.

✨ Another analysis found 25% lower odds of breast cancer detection among GLP-1 users.

💡 Why does this matter?

GLP-1 medications offer benefits beyond the number on the scale, including improved blood sugar control and support for weight management. Researchers are now exploring whether these metabolic benefits may also be associated with reduced risk of certain cancers.

⚠️ Important: These are early, observational findings—not proof that GLP-1 medications prevent breast cancer. More research is needed, and routine breast cancer screening remains essential.

At Metabolic Health Solutions, we believe metabolic health is about more than weight loss. It’s about investing in your long-term health. 💗

❤️ Could a GLP-1 help protect your heart?

Do you have heart disease? A family history of heart disease? Or risk factors such as high blood pressure, prediabetes, obesity, or high cholesterol?

A GLP-1 medication may be worth discussing with your healthcare provider!

🫀 Here’s why GLP-1 medications are making headlines for heart health:

❤️ Lower cardiovascular risk: Certain GLP-1 medications have been shown to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events, including heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death, in specific patient populations.

🩺 Improve metabolic health: These medications can support weight loss, improve blood sugar control, and help reduce several risk factors that contribute to cardiovascular disease.

📉 Support healthier blood pressure and cholesterol: Weight loss and metabolic improvements can lead to better blood pressure and lipid levels, helping address important cardiovascular risk factors.

🔥 Go beyond the scale: Heart disease is influenced by much more than body weight. GLP-1 medications can offer cardiovascular benefits in eligible patients beyond the number they see on the scale.

✨ The bottom line: Prevention starts with understanding your risk. If you have obesity, type 2 diabetes, established cardiovascular disease, or other risk factors, talk with your healthcare provider about whether a GLP-1 medication could be part of your personalized prevention plan.

At Metabolic Health Solutions, we believe metabolic health is about more than weight loss—it’s about protecting your long-term health and helping you feel your best. 💚

📩 Reach out to learn more about individualized medical weight management.

Important: Cardiovascular benefits differ by medication and patient population. Semaglutide has demonstrated a 20% relative reduction in major cardiovascular events in adults with overweight or obesity and established cardiovascular disease without diabetes. GLP-1 medications are not indicated for heart disease prevention in everyone with risk factors or family history alone. Medication decisions should be individualized.

👁️ GLP-1 MEDICATIONS & YOUR EYE HEALTH: WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

At Metabolic Health Solutions, your health is about more than the number on the scale. It’s about protecting your long-term health, too!

While GLP-1 medications can provide significant metabolic benefits, there are important eye-health considerations to understand.

🔹 Diabetic Retinopathy: Some studies, particularly involving semaglutide, have reported worsening of diabetic retinopathy, a diabetes-related eye condition. This may occur when blood sugar improves rapidly, especially in patients with existing retinopathy.

🔹 NAION (Non-Arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy): This rare condition occurs when blood flow to the optic nerve is reduced, potentially causing sudden vision loss. Research has identified a possible association with semaglutide, but a direct cause-and-effect relationship has not been established.

💡 What does this mean for you?
✔️ Tell your provider if you have diabetes, diabetic retinopathy, or a history of eye problems.
✔️ Keep up with recommended comprehensive eye exams.
✔️ Work with your provider to monitor blood sugar changes and determine the safest treatment approach.
✔️ Seek urgent medical evaluation for sudden vision loss or a sudden change in vision.

The bottom line: These findings do not mean GLP-1 medications are unsafe for everyone. Understanding potential risks, monitoring your health, and receiving individualized care are essential.

💚 At Metabolic Health Solutions, we believe weight management should always prioritize your whole-body health—not just weight loss.

🚨 Before you choose a compounded GLP-1, read this.

We know compounded GLP-1 medications can be less expensive and may seem like an easy alternative—but cheaper does not always mean safer.

Here are 5 things you should know:

1️⃣ They are NOT FDA-approved
Compounded medications are not reviewed by the FDA for safety, effectiveness, or quality before they reach patients.

2️⃣ Dosing errors happen
Different concentrations, vials, syringes, and units can make dosing confusing. The FDA has received reports of patients accidentally receiving too much medication, with some requiring medical attention.

3️⃣ Strength and quality can vary
Compounded medications aren’t required to meet the same FDA approval standards as commercially manufactured medications. Potency and consistency are important—especially with injectable medications.

4️⃣ Sterility matters. A LOT.
GLP-1 medications are injected. Contamination or improper sterile preparation can lead to serious infections and other complications.

5️⃣ “Semaglutide” or “tirzepatide” doesn’t automatically mean it’s the same medication.
Compounded products can differ in formulation, concentration, ingredients, and labeling from their FDA-approved counterparts. Some compounded products have also contained forms of ingredients that the FDA has specifically warned about.

💡 Does this mean every compounded GLP-1 is dangerous? No.
Compounding has a legitimate role in medicine when a patient’s needs cannot be met by an FDA-approved medication.

But if an FDA-approved medication is available, appropriate for you, and accessible, there are important reasons to understand exactly what you’re getting before choosing a compounded alternative.

At Metabolic Health Solutions, our priority is safe, individualized, evidence-based treatment—not simply finding the cheapest medication.

💉 Why Isn’t My GLP-1 Covered by Insurance?

If you’ve ever wondered why your GLP-1 medication is covered for one person but denied for another, you’re not alone. The answer often has less to do with the medication itself and more to do with why it’s being prescribed, what insurance plan you have, and how your plan is structured.

🩺 It often comes down to the indication.

Many GLP-1 medications are covered when prescribed for certain medical conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular risk reduction, or chronic kidney disease.

However, coverage for obesity and weight management—and some newer indications such as obstructive sleep apnea and metabolic liver disease—can be much more limited.

And here’s the frustrating part: the medication may be the exact same medication. The difference can be the FDA-approved indication being used and what your individual insurance plan chooses to cover.

💰 Why are insurers hesitant to cover GLP-1 medications for weight management?

Cost is a major factor.

GLP-1 and other anti-obesity medications can be expensive, particularly Covering these medications for a large population can create a significant cost for insurance plans.

📋 That’s why insurance companies may require:

• BMI requirements
• Certain medical conditions or comorbidities
• Prior authorization
• Step therapy or trying other medications first
• Documentation of lifestyle changes
• Specific weight-loss requirements
• Reauthorization every few months
• Or they may simply exclude weight-management medications from the plan altogether

🤔 So why does one person get coverage while another doesn’t?

Because insurance coverage is highly individualized.

Your coverage can depend on:
✔️ The medical indication
✔️ Your specific insurance plan
✔️ Your plan’s formulary
✔️ Prior-authorization requirements
✔️ Employer benefit decisions
✔️ Your deductible and cost-sharing structure

This is why two people taking the same medication can have completely different coverage and out-of-pocket costs.

At Metabolic Health Solutions, we know navigating insurance can be frustrating. We help patients understand their treatment options and, when appropriate, work with insurance companies to pursue coverage for GLP-1 medications.

Because getting treatment shouldn’t feel like trying to solve a puzzle. 💗

How quickly will I see results?

Everyone responds differently. Some people notice changes in appetite and weight relatively quickly, while others may take longer to see noticeable results.

The goal is consistent, sustainable progress—not rapid weight loss.

Slower, more gradual weight loss while taking GLP-1 medications may help preserve lean muscle and bone mass, reduce certain complications, and improve medication tolerability. These factors are important for protecting long-term functional and metabolic health.

Rapid, substantial weight loss—whether from GLP-1 medications, very-low-calorie diets, or bariatric surgery—can result in greater losses of lean tissue and may increase the risk of adverse effects. For this reason, the focus should be on healthy, sustainable weight loss while maintaining adequate nutrition, protein intake, and physical activity.

“ Eating as little as possible isn’t the goal, and inadequate nutrition can undermine muscle preservation and long-term results.”
Not eating enough on a GLP medication does NOT mean you’ll lose more weight.

In fact, eating too little can work against your long-term goals.

GLP medications reduce appetite and food intake—but your body still needs adequate calories, protein, vitamins, minerals, and fluids to function properly.

The goal isn’t to see how little you can eat.

The goal is to lose fat while preserving muscle and improving your metabolic health.

That means focusing on:
🥩 Adequate protein
🥗 Nutrient-dense foods
💪 Resistance training
🏃‍♀️ Regular physical activity
💧 Hydration
😴 Sleep and recovery
📈 Individualized medication management

Clinical trials of semaglutide have actually studied the medication alongside reduced-calorie nutrition plans and increased physical activity, rather than starvation or extreme food restriction. In STEP 1, participants received counseling for a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity; STEP 3 similarly combined semaglutide with a structured calorie-restricted diet and intensive behavioral therapy. (New England Journal of Medicine)

GLP medications are a tool—not a replacement for nutrition.

Our goal is not simply less food.
It’s better nutrition, sustainable fat loss, preservation of muscle, and better metabolic health.

Being successful with GLP medications is about more than taking the medication.

YOU NEED TO EAT AND YOU NEED TO BE ACTIVE

GLP medications can be a powerful tool, but the best results come from using them as part of a comprehensive approach to metabolic health.

That includes:
💪 Strength training to help preserve muscle
🥩 Prioritizing protein to support muscle and satiety
🥗 Nourishing your body with balanced, nutrient-dense foods
🏃‍♀️ Staying active and finding movement you enjoy
💧 Staying hydrated
😴 Prioritizing sleep and recovery
🧠 Working on habits and behaviors that support long-term success
📈 Regular monitoring and individualized medication adjustments when needed

GLP medications can help reduce appetite, improve blood sugar regulation, and make it easier to follow a sustainable nutrition plan—but they don’t replace healthy habits.

The goal isn’t simply to lose weight. It’s to improve your metabolic health, preserve muscle, build sustainable habits, and create a plan you can maintain long term. ❤️
