5 fun facts about breathing

Nasal vs. Mouth Breathing:

Breathing through the nose is generally healthier than breathing through the mouth. The nose filters, warms, and humidifies the air, which helps protect the lungs. In contrast, mouth breathing can lead to dry mouth and other issues.

Diaphragmatic Breathing: Also known as belly breathing, this involves the diaphragm—a major muscle in the respiratory system. Effective diaphragmatic breathing can improve your oxygen intake and may help reduce stress.

Oxygen-CO2 Exchange: When you breathe in, you inhale oxygen, which your cells need to produce energy. When you exhale, you release carbon dioxide, a waste product of your body's metabolism. This exchange mostly happens in the small air sacs in the lungs called alveoli.

Breathing Rate: The average adult breathes around 12 to 20 times per minute at rest. However, breathing rates can vary widely depending on factors like age, fitness level, and altitude.

Automatic Control: Breathing is controlled by the respiratory center at the base of your brain. This center automatically adjusts your breathing rate depending on your body's carbon dioxide levels, not oxygen levels as commonly believed. This helps maintain a stable pH level in your blood.

Ever feel like you’re moving through molasses? That’s reduced range of motion for you! It’s like your body’s stuck in first gear instead of shifting smoothly.
