Male Massage Therapists - Part 3 of 3
The Value of Respectful Touch
There is another perspective worth including in this conversation: what respectful, nonsexual therapeutic touch from a male practitioner may mean for survivors of trauma—both men and women.
For some survivors, experiences of harm involving men may have affected their comfort with male touch or vulnerability around men. If they freely choose a male therapist, a session centered on consent and boundaries may hold personal meaning: an experience of receiving care while retaining control.
Being listened to, having a boundary honored, and knowing that “stop” will be respected can matter deeply. For some people, those experiences may become part of their own healing journey.
That possibility is individual, never an expectation. Nobody needs to choose a male therapist, explain their preference, or push through discomfort. Massage is not a substitute for trauma treatment, and a therapist should never promise to heal someone’s trauma.
Male therapists can offer tenderness, patience, and compassion alongside the physical strength often associated with them. Recognizing that capacity broadens the conversation about men, touch, and care.
