The Life Participation Approach to Aphasia starts with a simple question:

“What is important to you?”

Every person who comes to Adler has different goals, interests, and priorities. For one person, it might be learning to navigate their phone. For another, it could be returning to a favorite hobby or reconnecting with friends and family.

Rather than deciding what someone should work on, we focus on what matters most to them.

Because communication isn’t the end goal—it’s the tool that helps people participate more fully in the lives they want to live.

Great communication isn’t just about speaking—it’s about creating an environment where everyone can participate.

Simple changes like reducing distractions, slowing down, focusing on one topic at a time, and using visual supports can make conversations easier and more enjoyable for people living with aphasia.

The best part? These are strategies anyone can use.

A little patience and flexibility can make a big difference.

Communication after aphasia looks different for everyone.

That’s why there isn’t a single strategy—or a single “right” way—to communicate.

Many people build a toolkit that includes writing, technology, visual supports, gestures, and supportive communication partners. The most important tool is the one that helps someone express themselves and stay connected to everyday life.

Every person’s communication journey is unique, and every toolkit should be too.

“It’s never too late.”

For many caregivers and families, there can be a misconception that if enough time has passed since a stroke or aphasia diagnosis, there are no longer opportunities for growth, support, or meaningful engagement.

But that’s simply not true.

At Adler Aphasia Center, members join us at all stages of their journey. Some discover us months after diagnosis. Others find us years later.

No matter when someone walks through our doors, they can find connection, support, community, and new opportunities to engage.

And for caregivers, perhaps the most important reminder is this: you don’t have to navigate this journey alone.

Adler is about so much more than communication.

It’s about belonging.

It’s a place where people living with aphasia can reconnect with the activities they enjoy, build lasting friendships, discover new interests, and spend time with others who truly understand their experiences.

Every member’s journey is unique, but one thing remains the same: no one has to navigate aphasia alone.

When people think about communication, they often think about speech. But communication can happen in many ways.

Writing, gestures, photos, communication apps, and other tools can help people express themselves, participate in conversations, and stay connected to the world around them.

Recovery doesn’t stop when an appointment ends.

Many of the most meaningful communication opportunities happen in everyday life—at home, with family, in the community, and through activities that bring purpose and connection.

That’s why Adler embraces the Life Participation Approach to Aphasia, helping members continue participating in the things that matter most to them.

When Muller spoke at last year’s Voices of Aphasia Gala, it was the first time he had addressed a large audience since his stroke.

He admits he was nervous. Before aphasia, speaking to groups was a regular part of his career as a principal. After aphasia, it became a challenge he wasn’t sure he could overcome.

But with support, encouragement, and hard work, he stepped up to the microphone and shared his story.

Today, Muller continues to grow in confidence and communication—a reminder that progress is possible at every stage of the journey.
